Transferring data from Win 2k to Win 7

just make sure your win 7 install is protected with a virus scanner that scans in realtime...Avast certainly does....

this will ensure any un detected nasties on your old drive be caught when you transfer.

you know where outlook express stores your emails so thats fine...Windows 7 integrates with Windows Mail though...or even Live mail if you update it.

Luckily both allow a full import of Outlook express contacts and emails..so you should be fine there; if you want to be really lazy then you can actually run outlook express from your old drive, and drag and drop emails and folders directly into windows mail on your new drive anyway! that can be a real fast way of doing things and means you dont get the awful "imported folders" rubbish that can happen in the automated method.

I did exactly that on my sister pooter however there is something that pops up that asks if you would like to take ownership etc of the files with win7. I'm not sure if you can disable that but it would help if you can it gave me a right pain in the neck sorting it for the first time

thats an auto pop up because the security settings of the old drive wont allow you access...windows 7 recognises that and gives you the option to "take control"..which it does so effectively ive even known it to open and access supposedly "password" protected windows installs on client pc's! LOL!

Ok, everything going quite smoothly, except....bloody Live mail won't import all of my outlook express e-mails!. Why?

I set up the virtual machine with XP and imported all the emails but I can't import them from there to Live Mail either! Also I can't create a shortcut from OE in virtual XP to the Win 7 desktop!

HELP!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Virtual machine? You should be able to just open up oe from the old drive drag n drop your emails into windows live mail...Or import direct from live mail:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows...Outlook-Express

You shouldn't need to be using a virtual machine at all...

No, I didn't think so either. The problem is, Live Mail only imports about half of my inbox!

That's odd...did you try just drag and drop from opening oe from your old drive? You should be able to do it outside of virtual machine and open it from its route directory...then just drag your emails across to your Live mail folders

No, that doesn't work. When you try to drag and drop it automatically opens up a new message box and if you try to attach the folder to it it says that the attachment's too big!

hmm try creating a folder on your desktop...create folders inside to help you organise your emails into their respective folders.

drag n drop the emails from OE into the folders

then drag n drop them out of the folders and into your inbox/folders in live mail.

No, still no joy. For some reason it stops downloading at about 3,600 messages of 9,500

I downloaded Thunderbird which accepted all of the emails but I can't get them off there either! I'd use it but it seems to get confused with my email addresses and it's not too clear how to set it up manually (I'm running an old Freeserve address through a BT account! And a business email through somebody elses server. All a piece of cake in OE but now I'm getting tetchy)!

Thanks for all your help so far anyway.

i would suggest the issue isnt software as much as the amount of emails your keeping! :D 9500 emails is a stupidly HUGE number!!

i thought my bosses outlook account was big with 800! i have a go at him regular to cut down on what he is saving!!

i would suggest you take alot of them out and simply store them as "files" in a folder somewhere..they will still open on a double click, but then wont fracture your mail folders like your seeing now.

i think your going to struggle with that amount simply due to size issues and folder structure issues......
