New european laws

I saw something yesterday on Teletext about the EU cracking down on water quality. In particular the report mentioned waters being enriched by farm chemicals.

Can anyone shed any light on these proposals?

Yes Steve, good morning.

The EU will be making proposals next year for legislation on toxins in the environment and hardening exisitng EU legislation on water quality.

SAA/NAA/Moran/NAFAC/EA/EN/WWF are all working together to put the strongest position paper together that we can, to get the legislation that is needed to protect the water environment. There is a short report in your minutes of Sunday. More will be published as it becomes available.

So for all those doubters who think NAA etc are a waste of space, things are being done.

Thank God for NAFAC/SAA/WWF who have the specialisms on board to carry the Water Framework Directive forward.

Yes,

At least lets all concentrate on anti pollution, anti gill-netting, or anti something useful, instead of the ridiculous idea of anti angling. Barking up the wrong tree.

Hi Mike

Just caught up on the minutes which arrived yesterday. Many thanks for sending them. Anglers seem to be getting heard on sea stocks at least.

Perhaps this issue of nitrates etc could do with some wider circulation?

Thanks for the link, Mark. It's well worth a look as the extract below shows:

"The Water Framework Directive will require all rivers, lakes and canals to be returned to "good ecological quality" within 15 years - and the measure of quality will be far tougher than it is now.

Scientists at the festival said that to comply with this new regime, pollution - such as from the leaching of fertilisers from fields - would have to be more tightly controlled than it is now."

While I am here Steve, have you seen what "someone" has done to the beautiful little weir at Wingham?

One of the worst acts of vandalism I have ever seen?

Not yet, Den. I knew the EA were going to repair it but I've been out of action for a while.

Steve, you are going to get one nasty shock when you see it, as I said, worst act of vandalism I have ever seen, for those of you who are wondering I will be posting some pics in a couple of days, but suffice to say that they(?) have filled it in with rocks, yes I did say FILLED it in, no more weir pool.

Here is a pic of it as it was a couple of weeks ago..

there are no buildings within 500yds, no farmland threatened, it would not matter if erosion doubled/trebled the size of it, so why fill it in?

Now here's a subject that needs some attention, why do so many lazy, idiots leave so much litter on the banks, or just thrown in the margins, meat tins, hook packets, sandwich wrappers, discarded line, empty shot dispensers and the like. They took it there, it was'nt there untill they left it there, why can't they just take it back home again, they had space to take it, use that same space to take it away again, if you read this just remember it the next time you are tempted to throw down a fag packet, I have found some disgusting things that can only have been left by anglers, as I'm sure many of you have.

Don't be a blanker take your litter home again.
