Frog Spawn

Judging by the mass of frog spawn in my pond today, it would appear that the cold weather hasn't stopped old Kermit getting his leg over! :D

they will kill your fish in the need to get their legs over ,we lost a very nice koi which still had its killer grasping it so tightly it couldnt open its gills ,on the other hand with natures 50-50 outlook the eggs and tadpoles probably feed a few fish as well

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

They kept us awake a few weeks ago. Must have been a gang of them joining in the frolics

I have noticed that this year there is a decline in the numbers of Frogs and Toads.

As a result I have probably only about half the amount of spawn normally seen.

I suspect that in my area the cold snap did great damage to the local populations.

On a positive note I have seen no reduction of Great Crested Newt numbers in my pond.

I see them daily tucking into the Frog Spawn.

As to Frogs and Toads killing Fish by being over amorous.

I have only had one occurance in the many years of Pondkeeping and thanks to speedy intervention was able to remove the offending Frog, thus saving the Fish.

The Fish kept the mark of the embrace and carries it still after 3 years.

The Amphibians are a great benefit to both Pond and Garden. The Tadpoles eat the Algae and dispose of other unpleasant items and organisms in the Pond.

They also rid the Gardens of many Insects and Animals we consider as pests.

I used to have a newt. I called him Tiny because he was my newt.

This is actually true and I used to feed him chopped worm on the end of a cocktail stick. I'd also drop spiders, flies, beetles, waterboatmen and just abot anything into his tub and he'd happily whatever was on offer. Grew some massive gonads too and turned bright orange underneath. I eventually put him back. He must have been quite a stud because he was such a pathetic wee thing when I got him but when he returned, he was a proper man.

At least I think he was a man. I won't hear different, so don't ruin it for me.
