what a mistake to make

Last night I had a load of carp feeding off the top but could not get a take.

I switched to to dry chum mixers glued toghether then glued to hook and dipped in active8 (first time I have used the stuff).

The carp were reponding as soon as loose offerings hit water so I cast out then feed so as to not spook fish.

I cast out, laid rod next to me on bank and picked up catty.

The take was so quick and violent that I did not even have time to make a swip at the rod as it flipped off the end of staging and sailed into middle of pool between two sets of lillies.

I did not have another rod with me and was only person down at the pools.

I stripped off and waded out to the lillies having to swim the last few meters.

I managed to grab rod but and started swimming back, about halfway I realised fish was still on but not really pulling back.

I swam back to swim, climed out then played and landed a 9lb common in only my wet underpants!!!!!!!!!!

Lesson learnt : next time open bail arm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great story RUDD, but next time make sure its a double. :D

Fishing seems to be my favorite form of loafing.

I know the joy of fishes in the river through my own joy, as I go walking along the same river.

What do you think if the float does not dip, try again I think.

That's one fish you will not forget about in a hurry.

yeah you'll never forget that fish, ive made a similar mistake, i forgot to put my bait runner catch over so that if i got a take it would let the line go...so after casting out withing 25mins i got a bite and my rod stand with another rod on it got pulled over..luckily the weight of the rod pod stopped the rod from going anywhere ....

what you should try is what john wilson does..take off the bail arm, and put an elastic band next to your reel and just put a little bit of line under the elastic band so that you can see if you get a take..

PB Mirror Carp: 10lb 7oz

PB Common Carp: 7lb 7oz

I think it may have happened to quite a few of us, it certainly happened to me, a quick buzz and it was off, fortunately the lake was shallow in the margins so I managed to rush in after the rod and retrieve it, but sadly lost the fish, whatever it was

What! you'd lost your landing net as well?

I predict the next mistake will be striking with an open bail arm. :D

:D:D:D Very funny. Definitely don't want to see the photos!

Pre-baitrunner days I had to jump in (only knee depth shallows) to retrieve the rod when method fishing, I'd only turned around for a few seconds to open the umbrella. It was only a little carp too, not much more than 2lbs. Now I always use baitrunners even if floatfishing or surface fishing, and even remember to turn the freespool on.
