Specialist Anglers Conservation Group

Press Release 27th January 2000

SACG strategy review.

The Specialist Anglers Conservation Group strategic meeting held in Leicestershire on January 23rd both furthered the development of the SACG and moved angling closer to unity between the Angling Governing Bodies and other representative groups, the Anglers Conservation Association and the National Association of Fisheries and Angling Consultatives.

With nearly all the single species groups who make up SACG represented and many other individual members present, the lively meeting was brought to a successful conclusion by Keith Barker of the National Association of Specialist Anglers, who took the chair.

All the freshwater angling governing bodies were represented by their leaders who spoke in support of SACG and its work in angling politics. Ken Ball, President of the National Federation of Anglers described some of the changes which are proposed within the NFA and hoped they would make the cause of angling unity easier to achieve. “We are all here to help angling and seeking unity. We are looking forward rather than back but we all lack funding for professional representation of angling in the national arena.” Chris Poupard of The Salmon and Trout Association said, “ We all have the same problems and the Moran committee proved that we can work together, Let’s put our differences to one side and look at the big picture.” Mark Hatcher of National Association of Fisheries and Angling Consultatives said, “ We found the differences we had on Moran were very fertile. They made us all think carefully about solutions and reaching common objectives.” Bob James represented the Anglers Conservation Association and concurred with the expressions of the need for unity within angling saying that we all had need of the same thing, good quality water for our preferred species, regardless of how or where we catch them.

After hearing the opening speeches from the leaders of these national bodies the assembled representatives of the single species groups gave their full backing to the work of Tim Marks and Chris Burt within SACG. Firm commitments were made to increase both financial support and committee attendance to cover the future work of the Group. The workload on Tim and Chris was reduced by the proposed appointment of a new Chairman and a new Secretary, which will take effect after the spring AGM. The proposed new Chairman, Alan Pearce, Chief Executive of the successful PAA and an independent member of SACG, has been working closely with Tim and Chris on a number of initiatives and looks forward to spreading the workload amongst more members. The proposed new group Secretary, Mike Heylin, also an independent member of SACG, hopes to help drive the cause of angling unity, with specialist angling taking a pro-active role whenever possible. He is also hopeful of more volunteers coming forward to take on some of the remaining tasks in SACG.

Once Tim and Chris’s resignations as Chairman and Vice-Chairman become effective at the spring AGM they will continue with their present active roles within SACG in building on their work in representing specialist angling to Government, the Environment Agency, the other angling bodies and outside organisations. The new Chairman and Secretary will then take over the internal running of The Specialist Anglers Conservation Group.
