Reels

I am now wondering what type of reel (coarse fishing) should I choose for my 12' Shimano rod? I wonder what sort of price new AND second-hand I will have to pay for good quality versus small pocket?

Any takers?

I bought a Shakespeare Mach 1 XT for £27 (I think) and it's a great wee reel.

Ok Andy,

Thanks, was that from new? £27 is reasonable do you think?

Hi Little Roachess

one of the other members on here, Sportsman on another discussion mentioned Spro reels. you can get a baitrunner reel (maybe not what you want) for new about £20 on ebay, can be used as normal fixed spool or baitrunner. In that sense its quite versatile in its uses available in 3 different sizes apparently.

I normally purchase mine from my local tackle shop. They have a good range there and prices really do vary.

The average price for a reel which isn't a leading brand seems to be about £12-£25 depending on the features/size ect: Whereas a leading brand such as Browning, Mitchell or suchlike is more £15-£150

For my feeder fishing I purchased 2 identicle Baitrunner reels which are by a company called ''Red Wolf'' they are quite large in size and cost me £10 each. Both have done me very well for 2 years and are still alike new.

For float fishing I have a Red Wolf reel which cost me £12, that has been going for 9 years now! Another one I purchased by Red Wolf cost me £18 and it is all in metal, that has been going for 4 years... So certainly good reels!

I do also have a few branded reels. I have a Michell Avocet 4000 which cost me £18, A Browning reel which cost me £67, Also two Shakespeare reels and a Zebco (Which I believe is Brownings budget range?)

I don't find much difference between the cheap and expensive reels (Unless we are talking about e-bay cheap reels) If you can handle a reel its quite easy to tell if its going to last or fall apart.

To recommend a good reel though here is one:

Its a good price, good brand, and good quality reel....

You can get a decent shimano reel brand new for about 40 quid (search on google) - why bother gambling on a second had reel that could break at any time - you just dont know how much abuse it has taken.

Yes shimano is the way to go on the reel front

I use a baby baitrunner 2500dl for most of my feeder fishing and ive just bought a shimano alivio fb for pellet waggler work and its a joy to use and so smooth and hard to believe i paid just 25 pounds for it .

I Think the alivio range is an absolute bargain

Thanks for the advice-many, many good deals here I can see. I have been scouring ebay for tackle items, but I think from what you say, a good reel is worth its purchase new. It's great when there are lots of different opinions and I can then make an informed decision.

Thanks again!

Definitely! Apart from being a really nice looking wee reel, it's smooth, the drag is excellent, the line-lay is as near to perfect as you'd expect to be for that kind of money and there's 2 spools.

I really like it a lot and yes, that's from new. I should actually buy another because it's not unweildy or cumbersome and it'll cover all kinds of applications.

One of the problems with many of the lesser known brands is that if they go wrong spare parts are hard to obtain. So there's something to be said for sticking to the big names, although not all of even these are good for spares. Alternatively you can buy old reels on eBay and use them as spares.
