Predator fish kept illegally

Slack lines

Recommended Posts

Fishery manager Timothy Phillips was today(Thurs) fined £1,650 for illegally keeping live sturgeon in a fishing lake at Thetford.

It was the first Environment Agency prosecution under the Import of Live Fish Act (ILFA).

King’s Lynn Magistrates’ Court heard that the only place sturgeon should be kept is in an ornamental pond but that there was a financial advantage to keeping sturgeon in the lake as they are attractive to anglers.

Phillips was accused of keeping prohibited non-native live fish at Witchlake Fishery, Oakwood Park, Blackdyke Road, Hockwold cum Wilton,Thetford, in Norfolk without a valid licence. He was also ordered to pay £2,000 towards costs.........

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I wonder who will be blamed/procecuted for the Wells Catfish, that seem to be "popping up" in a few rivers?

Have even heard of a few moggies caught on the broads in recent years. Not many, which suggests too few to establish a breeding population. May just be rumors mind. I'll try clonking in my kayak...

so were not allowed Sturgeon in a fishery in this country, or is this just because that guy didnt have a license? Im confuzzled....

As for Carp

“The carp is the queen of rivers; a stately, a good, and a very subtle fish; that was not at first bred, nor hath been long in England, but is now naturalized.” Izaak Walton. Here here! :P

A while ago there was a thread on which species you would most like to introduce into UK waters.

Having recently caught one and almost caught another I have to say that Sturgeon would top my list - if I lived in the UK ;)

As it is I don't, so I can fish for sturgeon perfectly legally :)

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.

Sounds like they where Pi$$ed at him because he hadn't put money in their pot for a license. He was easy prey for them, like motorists for the law <_< . Maybe they should try being as quick to prosecute polluters etc rather than picking on the easy meat ! I know of waters containing sturgeon but have had no hasstle....they must have coughed up some cash for the greedy EA  .

OK, so let's have anything that swims, and can put a bend in the rod of the (so called) "guardians of the waters", introduced as and when we (the guardians of the waters) want them. No control, no legislation governing where they are stocked, and in what numbers. All because some (the guardians of the waters) decide that they want to catch them, and someone else can make a bit of cash supplying that 'catching experience'.

Am I getting what most of you are saying?

The first of many such convictions I hope.

The thing is it will not be the start of a load of convictions, fisheries stock exotics but if the EA thought it was a problem then why allow anyone to stock them with a licence. No situation is going to be 100% contained, so the idea of granting licences is a little absurd and I just suspect it is as much a money making exercise as anything else.

So with out knowing the full details, it could be seen as targeting some one who has not coughed up.

It's either right or wrong to stock them, licences are just a money making exercise.

I rather enjoy fishing for unusual species, but frankly I don't give a damn whether the fishery held a permit or not as I doubt those with licences have much better checks in place to ensure none escape then those with out.

Stephen
