Hello Edd and welcome to the AnglersNet website.

Can you tell us a little information on where you intend to fish for carp - we don't need the name of the place (it is up to you) but information on how deep the water & shallow of water, type of water e.g. gravel pit, estate lake etc etc

Will you be fishing long distance or in the margin etc, etc,

This will give us rough idea on what suitable tackle you will need or require.

Growing old is inevitable but growing up is optional

depends what size Carp you're after and where you're fishing.

you'll need a Freespool reel if you really want to get into carp fishing, and a strong carp rod.

i think size 6 or 8 hooks are better for hair rigs than size 10.

12-15lb breaking strain line, ask in your local tackle shop for more detailed advise of what tackle to buy.

Welcome to AnglersNet Epat :)

As Andrew said, let us know more about the fishery you'll be visiting and we will be able to help you a lot more. The better the description (underwater snags, overhanging bushes etc) the better we can help :)

I'd class myself as an all rounder so I'd guess that for general use, rather than for a specific water, I'd recomend a 2.5lb test curve, middle to tip actioned carp rod matched with a freespool [AKA baitrunner] reel. The reel should hold 200-250m of 12lb line.

There are a lot of rods that match the spec, from less than £50 to several hundred pounds.

For reels I'd go for Okuma or Shimano [the latter only if cost's no object, they're rather pricey IMO, but my 4010 is still my favourite reel].

You'll get at least 2 spools with the reel, with 2 I'd load them with 10 and 15lb mono, with a third I'd add 20lb braid. My favourite hooklength at the moment is Sufix Stealth Skin, but most modern braids are very good.

Hooks should be good strong paterns, Drennan Super Specialists are a good budget hook. You will probably find a use for sizes 10 to 6, I find this covers 90% of my carp fishing.

Thanks to all who replied. I intend to fish on a lake "Lisnashannagh", outside Carrickmacross in Ireland. "Covers approx. 2 hectares with depths to 5m. This lake holds stocks of Bream, Tench, and Rudd to specimen

size as well as Roach, Perch, Pike and Carp.".

I would like to fish a waggler.

What advice

THANKS

Rather different matter then, the kit I recommended was for ledgering for specimen carp. For waggler fishing for smaller specimens then a powerful waggler rod and a smaller reel loaded with 6 or 8 lb line should be fine. Match the hook size to the bait you're using. e.g. a no 12 or 10 for a couple of grains of corn, no 10 or 8 for paste etc. You'll probably use hooks between 14 and 8 waggler fishing for carp.
