Would you recommend carriers for any other fish? I've just started using scales on occasion and had a near miss with a small carp (I just got the scales ok! I was playing...) and it twisted out of the sling. Was lucky it went straight onto the water but now its got me paranoid, don't want to hurt a fish in any way, let alone have it flapping around on the grass/mud/gravel/boards.

Or is it just too small a fish to bother weighing?

If you don't have a sling, I would either ask to borrow one (I'm sure someone will have a spare) or weigh the fish in the net and then subtract the weight of the net after. Carrier bags are ideal for the smaller species, but I think the tench will be too heavy for a plastic bag to cope and it might break on you. If no-one has a sling I'll bring you an old landing net head you can use if you like? That'll save you having to unscrew rescrew your net after each fish?

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

I found those quick release landing net connectors are ideal for this. I have them on my nets. Saves you having a big landing net pole waving around and taking peoples eyes out as you peer at the reading on the scales. :D

If you have a Carp Net it might be worth bringing it along or at least bring the biggest net you have as well as your standard coarse net. Some of the Wingham fish can be on the large size and it can make landing them a bit easier. You might find that you find yourself in a position of thinking I need a bigger net :D

Thanks for the offer Anderoo. I've got a sling but I think it may have been that the fish was a bit 'lively' and that it was the first time I'd ever used it. Will be using my 'pike' net for landing and will use my spoon net head for weighing from now on if the fish is a 'flapper'. Never thought of that tbh

I prefer a plastic bag for most of the smaller species (Roach,Dace,Perch etc) as you get a more acurate reading.I still wet them first though.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Quick tip for the would be Eel fishers have a few sacks to drop the Eels in at night otherwise you may end up in a very large tangle. I have always cut my line as near the hook as I can then got round to unhooking the Eel if I was putting it back that is.

I prefer mine smoked to jellied or cooked any other way.

If you get in trouble with a large Eel call for help. Don't flap around causing distress to yourself and the Eel...the Eel cant eat you well not completely unless it is really amazing.

Are they doing Otter burgers or the more preferable mighty Hog roast.

No one going to make a prediction for what they will catch themselves?

Well I will have a bash, I predict I will get a PB eel.

My other prediction is that I will look a right muppet when I end up with a bootlace and will be eating humble pie for weeks to come :D
