Wingham Fish-In 2011 Catch Reports

Steve Burke

Recommended Posts

Phew.... Just got back after a difficult weekend..... But enjoyable :-).

Firstly thanks to everyone..... Steve, Peggy, Terry and Glyn for letting me fish, cooking some excellent food and a great taxi service and fishing advice :-). Also thanks to Richard Capper for helping me map out the swim and pick some spots to fish and Anderoo for the advice he gave me on a fake maggot rig (it worked and I picked up another tench using it!).

The fishing was defiantly more difficult then last year bunt each time I go to Wingham I feel I learn more.... This time I definately felt more confident using a marker rod to map out more complicated swims (nothing I fish currently has bars like Wingham). From my point of view these fish ins are about enjoying yourself, catching some fish and learning something..... So 3 ticks there :-).

So once again, thanks to everyone and to all those still at Wingham I hope the wind dies down and the fish start feeding.... Although I don't feel confident about either..... Also I'm looking forward to an update from the eel anglers on the carp lake and the remaining updates from the course lake :-)

The only downside of the weekend was one of my reels balearm spring breaking and me deciding I don't like my landing net! So it's going to cost me a bit of money I think :-(. Any advice on a specimen style landing net which the arms can be taken out of the spreader block easily after netting a fish?

I use the Korum 42 inch net. It is really good and has served me well for a long time. It would definetly get a thumbs up from me. The arms are easily removable from the spreader block (but are not loose!) and it is nice and light.

Thanks Steve for giving me a chance to target the eels on the Carp Lake and thanks to Peggy for the fine spread everyday and Terri, Glyn for all the hard work they put in for the Fish-in and year round. Plus not forgetting Sam for all the work on the club house. I look forward to hearing about your catches on your new rod.

Well to the fishing, the eel fishing on the Carp Lake is superb and they do seem to run to a much higher average size then on the coarse lake. All were caught on Lob Worms.

I managed 14 over the weekend with 13 over 3lb plus one bootlace of 2-12 ruining my averages :D

The weights were 4-13, 4-11, 4-03, 4-02, 3-11, 3-10, 3-08, 3-07 (x2), 3-07, 3-05 (x2), 3-01

With the style of fishing I was doing it was likely that a Pike would turn up at some point. In total I had 4 Pike of 18-01, 7lb (x2) plus a small jack of around 2lb that even managed to do some tail walking.

I failed to get any Carp but did see one while sitting at the front of my swim firing out bait I noticed a weird sucking sound and looked down and a big Mirror was sucking eel slime of my landing net that was in the water. It had cleaned a big section of it. eel slime a new Carp Bait?

Unfortunately eel fishing and self take photograph does not really go hand in hand :D but I had a bash. But you can get an idea of the size of some of the bigger eels from these shots.

Edit: Forgot to add the 4-13 is a new PB.

I will have to give the car a spring clean before Paula get's in to it, she's away at a conference at the moment so I have a few days to give it a few blasts of air freshener and do a lot of drives with all the windows open :D

With the high average weights of eels caught by all of us on the Carp lake, it does make you wonder just how big they go in that lake.

After Budgies rescue act I bet they have all buggered off to the Sargasso

That might have been why so many were over on my side of the lake and throwing themselves on the hook to get away :D

Bloody hell, that is fantastic. I'm amazed those eels haven't cottoned on to boilies yet. I bet many of the carp anglers there have no idea that they're even in there!

Did you get a photo of the big pike?

Should have stuck some eel slime in a pot and sold it to me as a new glug :D

I plan to do rounds of the Carp lake on future visits selling little pots of ES Carp Glug ;)

I think I have enough of the main ingredient on my landing nets for the first batch :D
