ANGLERS in the region have the chance to reel in £1,000 by taking part in a charity fly fishing contest.

Macmillan Cancer Support is looking for hundreds of keen fishermen and women to take part in its Big Fish competition next month.

The charity hopes to raise more than £40,000 from the contest which is being run across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Local anglers can take part at Broom Fisheries near Annan on June 11 for the chance to win £1,000 in vouchers.

Celebrity angler Paul Young, who presents TV show Hooked on Fishing, said: “The Big Fish is a great event that I’m delighted to support. It gives people a chance to raise money to help those affected by cancer while doing something they enjoy.”

The fly-fishing contest, on June 11, will see anglers at 11 venues across Scotland compete to hook one of four tagged fish.

Each tag will correspond to a prize of either £200, £300 or £500 in vouchers, which can be exchanged for fishing gear at the Glasgow Angling Centre – although one tag will lead to a booby prize. There will also be prizes for the heaviest bag of fish and the biggest fish.

The angler who brings along the most sponsorship money on the day of the event will win the prize of a days’ fishing with Paul Young. All those taking part in the event must raise at least £50 in sponsorship.
