Hi there, just wanted to warn everyone not to do what my son did, he went on google to get a one day fishing licence and took the first listing which was rod licence application services and was sold a one day licence for £12.00!. my other son went to the post office and got his one day licence for £3.75, i thought this was awful, how can our young people who are starting a hobby be ripped off like this?

It is a rip-off, and I don't know why it is being tolerated, though I must say I would be very wary of paying any government tax through a website which didn't end ".gov.uk" or which hadn't been redirected to by such a website.

I notice that it comes top of the Google adwords if you search for "fishing licence". I believe that it breaks Google's terms and conditions, which include

"Websites that mimic or imply affiliation with official government websites"

You can complain about it here, if you think it should be pulled.

That site (or one very much like it) has been mentioned on here, in the angling press and on the BBC news quite recently. They check your application for any mistakes and charge you money for doing it. Nothing illegal, but not very nice.

I got mine from the post office and received a receipt over the counter that I could use for (iirc) one month, but received the licence just a few days later anyway. Considering all the muck-ups that have occured over recent years with buying the licence online, I'd rather do it the old-fashioned way.

i suppose its like those phone directory people that keep you on the phone to get money then charge you silly money to connect you if your foolish enough not to catch the number when they mumble it

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

Actually I think they are also breaking the trade description act as they claim they are checking your application.

I filled out their form with my 11 year old sons details, and it quite happily went on to the payment page and was going to take my money for someone who doesn't even need a licence.

Thats not my idea of checking . . . . .

It's about time anyone buying an annual licence got a one day licence for a guest with it for no exra charge - just fill it in and sign it before the guest starts fishing.

Angling is a dying sport and we need goernment to work with us to ecourage more new participants, not rip them off at every opportunity.

That angling is dying was brought home to me last week when I was house/cat sitting for my parents. My 8 mile each way trip to work was along the canal and through Birmingham's Brookvale park. I saw not a single angler fishing the park pool all week despite the good weather and the only guy fishing the canal was an old boy why was using kit that he must have had since the 60's.

That's because most of them will have been on the commercial 'catching pools' Ken.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

  • 2 weeks later...

do you have to buy a fishing premit for each place you fish as well as a rod licence?

How old are your kids lindyloo? 12-16 yr olds can get a years rod licence for a fiver. You were seriosly ripped.

the EA website is probably the best place to go for a fishing licence.
