Dry Fly for Carp

Dales

Recommended Posts

First post - please be gentle...

I have done a lot of fly fishing for carp on my local commercial (Chilham match Lake in Kent). My current setup is a 9' leader of 6lb mono, greased apart from the last 6 inches. The best hook I've found so far is the new Drennan barbel hook in size 12. They're super sharp, lightweight and a nice dull grey. They are quite pricey so I have also done well using a size 10 super specialist although I have doctored this with a permanent marker as I find them a bit too shiny in their natural state.

Bait wise I use a 8mm cork ball (cheap from Ebay). The Enterprise mixers, while very good on a controller setup are too heavy to use with a fly rod as they land a bit like a depth charge! With the corkball you can lay it out on the water with barely a "plop".

I have had a lot of funny looks when wandering with my fly rod but I have had an absolute hatful of fish up to 13lbs - and they go like stink! I'm taking one of my friends to Chilham on Monday evening. His biggest fish on a fly rod is a nice wild brownie of about a pound. Boy is he in for a suprise!

If you want any more advice just let me know.

Robin

Hi Robin, welcome to Angler's Net!

I haven't tried a cork ball on a fly rod. However, at this time of year there are a lot of tadpoles about in our area (probably those of marsh frogs), and I have caught carp on imitations of these, although just sub-surface.

I've had a few carp on the fly, mostly on dry daddies when fishing for big rudd. Had a few on emergers fished in the surface film as well, both on trad fly gear and with a controller float. Also had one of 12lb on a white dog-nobbler that took it on the drop - was actually fishing for trout that time - probably thought it was a bit of bread.

They're great fun as are any reasonable fish on appropriate fly tackle. I used to do a lot of fly fishing for rudd and chub - must do some this year, it's been a couple of seasons since I fly fished for coarse fish.

Hi Steve

I've never fished sub-surface for them to be honest. I always assumed that it would be difficult as they don't have that predatory instinct that chub or trout do that would make them chase something. I might give it a whirl on Monday though.

I would definitely recommend the cork balls though - light enough to cast without commotion and super boyant so you don't have to keep ginking them like yo do with a deer-hair mixer.

Good luck, Robin. We'd be interested to hear how you get on.

Robin, using artificial flies (as opposed to dog biscuit imitations!)I have had the most sucsess fishing buzzer imitations in/just under the surface film.I have had a couple on deeply fished leaded nymphs though. All of my carp fly fishing has been on trout waters where the carp have offered a bit of sport during the heat of the day when the trout havnt been feeding.

As for predatory instinct carp certainly exhibit this at certain times of the year. They actually feed on pin fry on one water I know and if I remember correctly Steve Burke has caught them on tadpole imitations.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Well I'm off to my mates lake with fly rod in hand. The carp have all come up in this heat so we're going to see if we can catch a few.

We've also been trying to get the action on film so (sooner or later) we can post a few clips on the web.
