I have recently fished a private stretch of the river Dearne with my mate and caught a couple of Trout. I have been told that there are decent Chub, roach and trout in the water. Howwould yu recommend catching them. It it 8ft in the place we fish. We fish a drop off. What baits should we use????

I'm not entirely sure of the rules, but I'm not sure you should be using any bait at all at the moment!

They are suckers for a big bit of bread though. :D

Owning the river doesn't give anyone the right to waive the close season.

Fly fishing for trout is not a problem.Bait fishing for trout could well be OK, I'm not sure. But to be on the safe side I'd feel inclined to check with someone who does.

Nope! The 14th March - 16 June Closed Season is for Coarse fish, ostensibly to allow them time to spawn.

Game fish on the other hand, such as trout, spawn at a completely different time of year and as of the date of the original posting, it's Open Season for trout.

I know on some waters they do allow worming. Fly-fishing's OK, but a tad over-rated IMHO if you want to catch lots ... that's where lure-fishing comes into its own, if it's permitted.

DG
