Is owning a fishery a profitable buisness?

Hi all, come over all ultrapreneurial lately...

I was wondering if owning a fishery is profitable or not, and is there still a Market for a new fishery?

If I bought a load of land in the centre of England and dug some big holes and filled em with carp, would it be worth it?

Annual pay for owner, I know it depends on fishery but try to answer?

Thanks

Its only an opinion but I would err on the side of 'labour of love' to be more common.

I'm sure there are highly profitable fisheries out there but to start from scratch rather than have an existing lake in situ would be very expensive and a very long and drawn out process, not to mention the several miles of red tape you'll probably have to wade through.

I'm sure it would eventually balance the books out but it is, at best, a very long term investment.

Going off a local commercial I occasionally fish of about an acre, with every swim taken would amount to iro 40 anglers @ £6 a head.

If you could 'guarantee' 20 people a day, 365 days a year (realistic attendance on a good day IMO, I may be wrong however) that amounts to £43680 pa.

Fisheries do seem to come on the market a lot, so if they were such a good business I wonder why everyone seems so keen to sell them.

Please don't take this personal chubfrenzy, but you're not the only one that thinks "digging a few holes and filling them with carp", constitutes making a fishery. Those that do think that way are usually the ones that own the worst kind of 'commercial fishery'. There is a lot more to creating a fishery than that. Before you even think about it, I would suggest you do a lot of research into the subject. Not only into the financial aspect, but also into the environmental and ecological side of building and maintaining a fishery.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I've no idea how they make a decent return on investment even when they do put profit first. I reckon that like motor racing, the best way to make a small fortune running a fishery is to start off with a large fortune!

I saw a place advertised in trout and salmon for 1.2m - big house, 50 acres, trout lakes. If I were a city sort looking to retire early and sell my London house, I would have that in a flash. Not sure I would ever get round to offering tickets to it though!

Steve, did you put in an offer? :D
