SALMON, trout and sea-trout anglers from this region and all over Britain will be interested in the Hardy Tyne Fishing Festival on Sunday, September 25, with many fine beats to fish.

The Tyne has pride of place now as England and Wales’ top salmon fishing river.

It also has good runs of sea-trout some of which go well into the teens of pound. These are fish of a lifetime.

The Tyne Riparian Owners and Occupiers Association have donated lots of excellent fishing over much of the Tyne catchment.

Tyne has seen a record spring run this year since records have been kept. Last year’s catch on the river is said to be 5,115 salmon and sea-trout combined – the largest to date.

Interested anglers have until 1pm on Monday, August 15 to submit their bids for their chosen beats.

These can be made by email, text or phone. There are many sensibly-priced beats to bid for.

All funds raised will go to the Tyne Rivers Trust to continue their work in protecting the Tyne and improving habitat, fish passage etc.

:: THE Northumberland Branch of the Salmon and Trout Association is holding a Free Junior Anglers Day at Northumbrian Water’s Derwent Reservoir on Tuesday, August 9.

The day will be split into three sessions of two hours – 9.30am to 11.30am, noon to 2pm and 2.30pm to 4.30pm with booking essential. Qualified, licensed Angling Development Board coaches will be on hand to deliver the session.

There will also be bait and fly casting competitions. All registered participants will receive a certificate and goodie bag. To book, contact Carole Sanderson on 01697 748003. Email DamselflyCaj@aol.com.

:: RIVER anglers are finding sport slowing down with a good spate necessary to get fish moving. Some fish have entered the Coquet on the large tides of late.

One angler in the right place was Amble rod Paul Nelson, who landed a superb 17lb 7oz salmon near Howdene Burn on the River Coquet.

Paul’s fish took a Golden Shrimp. He also reported sea-trout and some grilse entering on the big tides despite the low water.

:: TYNE’S sport has slowed up and needs another rise in flow, as does the Wear, Eden and Border Esk. Till’s sea-trout night shift anglers are doing very well, with sea-trout to 9lb caught under the cover of darkness.
