So we are all "Paranoid" are we?? Then pray tell why the Tackle Trade organisations are putting so much store by the actions of a few "Loonies" then please!!

The threat is VERY real and to say it does not exist, or will never happen is an extremely short sighted view to say the least. If the CA DO want to use anglers tio help there cause, where is the harm?? If shooting is banned as most right mindeed peole see as a real threat. Then angling has to be next. But at least if we are involved and the inevitable(?) does happen we will at least know how to counter the threat will we not?!

United we stand - Divided we fall? Not a bad addage is it??

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

Simple question, simple answer:

Yes, you are paranoid.. and so are those "Tackle Trade Organisations"..

Source material btw? Research? I only ask because the research skills of yer average CA-supporting anti-angling forelock tugger are non-existent.. so don't believe what you may have read in the "Daily Panic"..

??

Chris

I am not sure what you mean by "the Tackle Trade organisations", so I will set the record straight.

The only national trade organisation for angling is - not surprisingly - the Angling Trades Association (ATA). It was formed almost 35 years ago, and I have been employed, part-time, by the ATA in various guises for 18 years... currently as Technical Director, so I think I write from an informed position.

The ATA plays a full and central part in angling politics, as a members of the Moran Committee, the now defunct National Angling Alliance (NAA) and, latterly, as one of seven founder organisations that make up the Fisheries & Angling Conservation Trust(FACT).

The ATA takes threats to the sport very seriously, and I have been dealing with this issue throughout my time with the Association (and before that, as the National Association of Specialist Anglers General Secretary). Indeed, I could make a very good case to illustrate how the ATA currently leads on countering anti-angling propaganda and resists campaigns by the CAA/Pisces and Peta.

The ATA has no relationship with the Countryside Alliance (CA), and never has. It is not a CA member, either. True, we worked together on one project a few years ago, and jointly formulated & sponsored a pro-angling initiative (the 'Get Into Angling' campaign) in conjunction with the NFA.

The now infamous 'Memorandum of Understanding' (MOU) between the NAA & the CA was an well-meaning attempt to foster jaw-jaw, not war-war, between organisations that otherwise might compete for anglers' support and press column inches. It served its purpose for a while, but it has now withered on the vine. It is defunct.

That is history; FACT (which replaces the NAA and will, progressively, do the same for the Moran Committee and the Joint Angling Governing Bodies [JAGB]) has no such MOU with the CA or anyone else, and will not have one. FACT neither hides its head in the sand over anti-angling nor panics as soon as the media raises the issue. The response is mature, robust, informed, co-ordinated and proportionate. I am not going to say more than that: our ememies probably read AnglersNet, and giving away the game plan is hardly a winning strategy in a war, is it?

If you - or anyone else come to that - wants to play their part in helping to protect and promote the sport of angling, all you have to do is ask. I have lots of information which I am happy to share. The more pro-angling advocates and activists, the better.

Dear Chaps,

Nice to see Chris Goddard posting some sense amid a thread gone dubiously off track towards the nearest sheep field. Well done Chris.

Nice also to see Bruno telling it how it is regarding anti-angling forces and how serious their threat is taken in the angling political world. Kind of dispels the opinion that we are under no threat when "our own" angling organisations think otherwise?

The NAA is defunct. The new FACT is born so let’s move on upwards towards a sustained unity.

The MOU is defunct. Personally I welcome that as I have "always" believed angling "outside" the CA remains big enough to look after its own interests.

The challenges facing the new FACT are undoubtedly tough. But the willingness for old NAA counterparts to work together still remains. I embrace that willingness as a sign for hope that the new FACT will succeed.

Bruno said;

A green light if ever I saw one. So what say you all? What are YOU prepared to do for your sport? Any ideas?

Bruno, not wishing to criticise at such an early stage, can I ask, are there any plans afoot yet for FACT having its own website aimed at keeping grass roots angling informed about the work FACT will be undertaking on behalf of angling? Personally, I feel grass roots angling would be more FACT supportive if they knew more about the work FACT were doing? As I say, not criticism just an idea for the future.

So there you have it galls and guys. Bruno could not have made it clearer. The good ship FACT sails on under its own sail NOT being influenced by CA winds.

The CA however, might be wise to inform its own rural memberships that their sheep are in grave danger, given the gravity of affection for said animals by certain posters on this thread.

Baaaaaaa for now,

Lee.
