TalkSport Now re. Banning Fishing

I'm charging about a bit with the following . .

Paul don't get me started on Magpies. Op's too late . .

The population here ( Orpington ) has risen to dizzy heights, as elsewhere. I have watched them taking young Blackbirds, Sparrows and Wrens from the nest. Pulling and playing with Frogs from my pond eating only the eyes. I can shoo them away when I'm at home but the rest of the time ?

But to my point. When man has removed a predator a prey species will expand. Magpies ( like Foxes, Deer etc ) have few predators and have moved into the urban areas with greater supplies of food resulting in larger numbers of young making it through the first winter. Remove the natural predator then mankind must move to take it's place to control numbers. But some sections of mankind can't see beyond the end of it's collective nose. OK I've got off the subject but in some ways it's all interlinked. There are those who will always try to ban somthing they don't or won't understand. The anti's would ignore the fact that the majority of British waterways are clean due to one lobby.

We must be thankful that fish are not soft and furry otherwise anglers would have been in line in front of Foxes.

Now here's a thought . . you don't here much about protecting Mink, can't think why !

I've found it takes a hell of a lot of Mink to make Mink eye soup for four.

Back to the thread. I can't see angling being banned in my life time. But we need to be very, very careful to ensure that my children and their children can enjoy the freedoms we do. A lot can change over the course if a few years. If you want an example look at the Anglican Church !! . . scary.

Magpies.

I grew up on the edge of the country, and helped a local arable farmer (my best mates' Dad) to locate then blow a whole lot away.

Ditto Collared Doves ("newcomer furriners"), Woodies, sparrows, starlings...

You get the picture...

Long time ago it was, when such 'prejudices' (in reality, the prevailing orthodoxy) and removals seemed like good sense.

I went on to kill a whole load, as a young adult, myself.

But now?

I look out of a window each morning, and see some songbirds, a heap of squabbling magpies, woodies, ring-neck / collareds and starlings, a whole load of Grey Squirrels etc, and think...

What?

"Blow them away?"

Nope.

"Let them get on with it. They were around and getting it 'right' or 'wrong' a long time before any of US..."

(The myth of a bounteous, perfectly ordered, in-synch English countryside being just that - a comparatively recently made man-made myth. Plus, of course, when you are bored out of your tiny mind, which you often are, living out in the country, a licence to kill seems like some sort of way out...).

Predator control?

REAL problems...

No problem.

I have done it (and, then, some...).

Ruling some mythical, never-existed, rural roost, though?

Er, pass.

Hunting foxes with horse and hounds?

All of those Countries mentioned have a long tradition of hunting with hounds, on horse and on foot.

The quarry ranges from wild boar, deer, hare, fox and rabbit.

Only the UK has banned hunting with hounds.

As a point of interest regarding the RSPCA, when a certain Ms Ballard (Is she still in power?) took over she was quoted as saying fishing was inherently cruel, & she would not uphold the cause of fishing.

Also did'nt the RSPCA say that they would not campaign against angling because the majority of it's members did'nt want it. Now that's a little different to actively supporting angling.

Anyway I think I'll pop across to their site & have a look.

Peter.

i bet the government spies are homing in on me using a naughty word to get this info

i can also see why a certain member moved to holland :D

quote:

Bestiality is illegal in many jurisdictions, while others generally outlaw the mistreatment of animals without specifically mentioning zoosexuality. About half of the states in the United States explicitly outlaw bestiality (sometimes under the name sodomy). In Germany, sex with animals is not specifically outlawed and this is generaly the case in Europe, exclusive England. Denmark and The Netherlands is two of the few countries where bestiality is legal
it also may explain why pot is legal in holland maybe the goats need it to forget :D
