Have a look at page seven of the Sunday Times today.

PETA is planning to launch a national advertising campaign against angling later this year.

No, it may not succeed in the short term but the war is starting, so would you all please get ready to fight them. If you do not pay to defend your sport don't expect others to do it for you.

Further to the above, Mike, I was led to believe that the SACG was going to be wound up to form a new group: the SAA, which would collectively represent over 10,000 anglers. Now this figure this isn't very high considering the amount of anglers in this country?? In my opinion, there needs to be a move towards greater unity in not only specialist angling, but 'angling in general'.

The National Angling Alliance (NAA), I understand includes the National Federation of Anglers (NFA), the National Federation of sea anglers (NFSA), the Angling Trades Association (ATA), The Salmon and Trout Association (S&TA), and the National Association of Fishery Consultatives (NAFAC). Am I right in saying that the SAA is an affiliated member of the National Federation of Anglers (NFA)? If so does it have representation of its Executive Committee?

I don't know how others feel about this, but personally i believe there are an awful lot of Federations and Associations, the committees of which I'm sure work very hard. However what is actually being achieved?

There needs to be ONE VOICE representative of ALL anglers in this country! Then we will be in a position to do something to combat any future threat from anti's.

Again, in my opinion, the figure above (10,000 anglers) is a false one. Please note this is just my opinion! But when you have affiliations, the membership numbers of clubs affiliating are included in the total, which represents an incorrect figure of those actually choosing to subscribe. Hence my original question!

I very much look forward to a response on this one!

You are correct all those you mention including the SACG (soon to be SAA) are part of the NAA. The SACG is affiliated to the NFA and now has representation on there National Executive.

The SACG represents specialist anglers through their respective groups. There are of course some individual members who subscribe direct, although whilst welcoming these, the SACG has never set out to recruit individual members on a large scale.

I hope this helps, don't know what happened to Mike, probably gone fishing.

Anyway back to the subject of the thread.

I think it is important for all anglers to keep a watch out for any anti angling activity and to feed them back to a central source to be dealt with. The central source should be managed by the NAA and or one of it's members. I will asked this to be raised at the next meeting, Feb 12.

It may at first appear I am drifting away from the original title thread, but it is related because of the following Quote: "If you do not pay to defend your sport don't expect others to do it for you." So, perhaps you could help me with this Alan (or Mike)? It relates to membership of said groups: QUOTE: "The SACG is affiliated to the NFA and now has representation on there National Executive." Does this repesentation consist of one person? What about voting and voting rights? How are the views of members withing those affiliated bodies made known? Is representation coupled to membership strength - eg one vote for say every 50 members? Two votes for 100 and so on?

In my opinion this has to be balanced. Mike has clearly inferred that we should all be putting our hands in our pockets by his statement: "If you do not pay to defend your sport don't expect others to do it for you." But before any of us are expected to do so, we should be informed of exactly where we are likely to stand with regards such representation.

My intention is to join one of the Societies, Associations or Federations, but with so many where does one stand?

To fight against the likes of PETA we need an extremely strong and large organisation.

The first I heard of such organisations as SACG, NAA and so on was from the Internet! Any successful group must have an advertising base from which to grow - it must encourage membership, otherwise it won't!

MPB......Your name might be mumbo jumbo but you talk sense! but lets not forget that at least these guys are having a go, but i personally think that at the moment with all the "intials" that are flying about for this that and the other they have no chance whatsoever of catching the attention of the very people they need to, show us pics of big fish or tell us of a great new venue then we are flies around the proverbial, but a page full of letters and we turn over to the next one! I for one have to recheck whats what everytime one of these threads comes up!!! why keep bringing in different and new names, why not restructure an existing one?? then we can move forward with a plan to combat groups like PETA.
