Maybe adding a springload mechanism to the dropper would work. As it hits the lake bed it works in the same way as a conventional dropper but then as the latch opens the front there can be a spring inside that will eject the bait causing it to spread a little more.

Interesting, I wonder if some sort of super scaled up shot gun feeder would work. The sort of thing that they use for pellets on commercial waters, that has a spring mechanisim to push the pellets out of the feeder when it's on the bottom.

It could be an interesting project for any one with tackle making skills.

Yeah that would be the kind of effect to go for. Just to get a little better spread. Shame I am not one of those who has the time or patience to do it lol. I do think it could be a useful bit of kit though in the right hands.

Dales,

We use pooch guns made from 2 1/2 inch plastic sewer pipe. It's hard to get the method balls the same weight - thus the same distance. But once in "range" not a problem. The "shot gun" affect/effect can be obtained using range cubes. Here again, overall weight determines distance.

If you make a pooch gun it is more ecofriendly to use pva as the wadding.

I think something that exploded the bait out when on the bottom would be awsome to give that bed covering effect that some anglers are after.

If allowed and affordable a bait boat with PVA bags timed to break up on the way down seems like a good idea but it does get to a point when you think well they are only Bream are they even worth the effort. Why not just feed a load of boilies they will get to the bottom with out drifting to much and with some luck you might get a decent sized Carp ;)

I think something that exploded the bait out when on the bottom would be awsome to give that bed covering effect that some anglers are after.

I've just seen this, and I assumed that there was a 'spod' that released the bait on the bottom like a bait dropper.

It's just that, not being a 'spodder' I wouldn't know. When Andrew started the Big Bream thread, I thought of something like this, and basing it on an old home made bait dropper, I did a few sketches.

If I ever get round to making it, I'll let you know.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Hello all. I've had my nappy changed (as Tigger so nicely put it :P ) and calmed down, apologies for any insults on my part.

Anyway.

John is right, somewhere in the Big Bream topic I talk about a home-made 'sinking spod' that comes in backwards, that is balanced so it sinks very slowly through the surface layers, the contents shaken out, and retrieved. Kind of like a big feeder, but one that doesn't deposit a pile of bait on the bottom, but spreads it out so once it's settled you get that nice fine coating.

I did make one and it did work. However, I came to the conclusion that it didn't actually have any benefit over a normal spod, so long as you take any surface drift and/or tow into account when mixing the groundbait/deciding what bait items to use. (Rich was right on that one.) I've tested both and settled on the normal spod. The other benefit the normal spod has is that it stays on the surface and doesn't cut through the water column, which in some circumstances might be more disruptive to fish.

On a water where you want to get your bait to a specific spot and which does not allow the use of boats or baitboats, and where you want to get a decent bed of bait out relatively quickly, I still think a spod is the best option.

I realise that the following only proves that spodding little balls of groundbait doens't not work (if you follow), but at the weekend I spent almost 2 hours doing just that (between 11am and 1pm) and at 8.45pm this hit the spreader block:

I wouldn't dismiss it without trying it.

Well done that man....what a monster!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!
