Carpers rant.

All,

KISS is one for the ages. Much like a favorite of my generation SNAFU - situation normal, all fouled up.

Here are some I keep handy I though you might like.

DINK - Double Income No Kids. Recognized by referring to their koi pond, dog, cat or favorite fishing rod as though it were human.

LOMBARD - Loads of Money but a real dipstick. (used by bait and tackle salesmen who must "endure" certain customers)

PICNIC - Problem In Chair Not In Computer. I have a picnic every time I turn this stupid thing on.

BWAIN - Bait Without An Interesting Name. (I stole this from TWAIN) TWAIN is "technology without an interesting name". I like mine better.

Think I'll have a picnic now

I don't think it's anything to do with stupidity or naivety or being gullible Dales, and I'm certainly not looking down on anyone, in case it looks that way. If I imagine myself now as a new angler, I'm sure I'd be falling into exactly the same traps. How would I know any different? Who would teach me?

I know you were not looking down on anybody. It's just I don't see any difference between fishing and any other walk of life. No matter what your interest is you are bombarded with information, advice and subtle hints on what you need or must do. As Budgie pointed out the marketing can be subtle, they may be giving you good advice about using sweet corn and rambling on about how cheap it is but some where almost hidden will be a bag of "Master Baits" but that is no different to any other sport/hobby or in fact anything in life. There will always be in your face and subtle advertising going on, it's modern life. Everyone has some agenda to push or product to sell.

If you want to play football all you need is a ball, but if you buy ball X you can put more swerve on the ball, buy predator boots and they will also improve the swerve. Put two and two together and you will the master of the free kick just like Beckham  The fact that some kid in Brazil or Argentina can do it in bare feet with some thing cobbled together to make a ball might not register to some. Don'y forget your Nike or Adidas kit and better get some of those isotonic drinks and a plaster to stick on your nose to increase your oxygen intake. You will need a kit bag, much better if it the same brand as the club you support use. You also need a collection of different studs and tools to change them with, shin pads, training gadgets, balls on string, cones, kick boards, mini goals, hoops to chip through. And just when you think you have it all, they go and bring out an even better version and so you need to go out and buy some more. Can't be seen in last season's shirt, better get the new one. Beckham uses hair gel Y, I need to buy that

All you need to fish is a hook, some line and some bait and a coke tin or bottle would also be good. There will always be people who will be a "slave to fashion" and chase the next best thing or have more money then sense. If they were not blowing it all on fishing kit, they would be spending it on something else. Just as well we have the wise sages of AN to hand out pearls of impartial wisdom to new anglers.

Stephen

Sadly very true Dales. Just a sign of the times.

Now you mention it yes it is :D

But what ever it is, I don't think you can get advice on anything any more with out something being pushed. Other then on places like AN, no one will ever recommend getting a float rod and half a pint of maggots and keeping it simple :( and so I do agree if I had just started out fishing I would be in the market for a set of Carp rods, baitrunners and alarms and my first cast would no doubt be with a hair rigged bait because that is what I would associate with fishing. But it would be my own choice and would it be so wrong, if I enjoyed it. Why should it matter if some one wants to free line a bait or have some fancy rig that they do not even understand why they have chosen it or what the component parts are designed to do. If they catch the odd fish and get enjoyment from it, other then to there wallet what harm does it do?

AN has some top notch anglers all the way down to some one who just wants to wet a line once in a while and maybe catch a fish, any fish will do and some times I think it's hard for the dedicated and top end anglers to appreciate that not everyone cares why they catch, wants to understand the mechanics of rigs and baits and are happy to buy what ever they come across and fish a certain way because they saw it some place. I just don't see what is so wrong with that.

Not everyone cares why they do catch, but everyone cares why they don't catch.

The point is that we are told the problem of not catching is solved by changing rigs and bait, and this is rarely the case. It is usually something much more fundamental - time of day, time of year, water conditions, weather conditions, noise, fishing pressure, baiting - than whether you're fishing a cell boilie on a KD rig rather than a KG1 boilie on a chod rig.

I've tried hard not to get embroiled in this thread, but you've used my kind of bait now Stephen, and I've taken it. :D

The rampant commercialism in angling, has been IMO, the worst thing that could have happened. OK, we 'old timers' might swim against the current trends, but it's because we remember what it was like, before 'instant' catches were promised/demanded. There have always been 'magic' rigs, baits, and pieces of kit, and the current ones are mainly just adaptations of those that have gone before. The only difference now is that many anglers take up angling because it is the 'in' thing, and some success is almost guaranteed. Advertise a 'new must have' rig/bait, (usually designed for a specific purpose), used by the 'famous' I Catchum to pull out a large (usually) carp, and the gullible angler has to buy it. He goes to a water over stocked with fish and, (surprise, surprise) he catches!. It must therefore be a fantastic rig/bait. The fact that he could have caught using a much simpler, (and cheaper) rig/bait doesn't enter his head. He doesn't question it, because I Catchum is a 'great' angler and writes for the papers, so he must be good. I have heard/seen this scenario so often that it's almost comical. I know it happens in other walks of life, but that doesn't affect angling, so if someone wants to 'bend it like Beckham', let them, it's their money, and time they are wasting. When it happens in angling, apart from the effect it has on me and my choices, it also has a knock on effect throughout angling. To keep the 'customer' satisfied, there has to be 'upgrades' on the market almost constantly, and so the cycle continues. As it goes on, it becomes more and more artificial, and the angler who falls for this needs his 'fix'.

Angling itself, then becomes a 'product', a thing that can be purchased, with expectations of a result in exchange for a day ticket. I have seen and heard anglers complaining that they have been ripped off because they haven't caught, or not caught as much as they think they should have. The follow on to this is higher stock levels, different/exotic species, more 'comfortable pegs seating platforms, more amenities on the fishery 'complex', until it's as far removed from actual angling, as it can be, it becomes catching, instead of angling.

If this sounds far fetched, then I assure you,its not. We already see groups forming to do away with the 'dangerous' predators, backed by I Catchum and his mates, I look in on other forums and there are calls that all waters should be available on day ticket. There are even a few that believe that the EA should be responsible for 'tidying' river banks to provide easier access!

Angling is in grave danger of losing it's identity completely, and just being another form of entertainment, along with games consoles and the like.

I'm glad that the majority of my angling years are behind me, and I experienced it when I did.

My rant over,(for now).

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Now this I disagree with as I think the opposite is more true!

"dedicated and top end anglers" would understand the basics and the "simple approach" attitude because they have been there when they started out and only progressed to the more advanced/complicated things BUT could and often do return to basics/simple things when the situation arises. The Instant Expert is the one who cant understand why anyone else would NOT want to use the high tech approach as that is all he knows (but not necessarily understands!)

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!
