Carpers rant.

Just offhand I'd say gozzer is as old as I am also. I won't stop bychin' but I get it!

Not quite there in number of years, Phone, but maybe in stubbornness. :D

As I said, I don't give a damn about what rigs are used, (as long as they are legal). My beef is with the whole package and how it impacts on other angling disciplines, and the ecology of our waters.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

someone brought me over some ESP ready tied Chods yesterday on the pond and asked me how he put the boilie on em. The pond is weed free and mostly gravel. I asked why he was using the Chod and he said, and this is no word of a lie, "ive not caught a carp from here yet and saw these so thought i would try them". I explained what the rig was about and that apart from the hooking properties this rig would offer no advantage. We tied a simple 7'' bolt rig with a boilie not even a pop up, i told him where to cast to as i knew of a bit of a bank and a few more little tips and again i **** you not, the guy had a perfect 20! CASE AND POINT!

You got 'im learned then Sean, good on you.

If only people would ask more from others.

I feel lucky I was taught by my Dad, first with a garden cane, bob float and twine down Earlham Park.

I've had my apprenticeship, I've paid my dues. You really CAN tell who hasn't though and you just want to shake them.

I'd love the chance to be able to teach others how to fish, I really would, I'd teach them everything I know (a GOOD 5 minutes worth there!) but apart from family, who'd trust me? I bloody wouldn't trust me either!

All we can do is hope the enlightened few manage to progress from the over-complicated 'ready rigs', back to basics. On the way, finally understanding what those first birdsnest specials were really intended for.

I learnt to fish by being a bit cheeky and asking other fishermen on the one pond i used to fish (as a 10-12 yr old kid this!) question after question after question, and then i'd question the answers haha. I spent the next 10 years just float fishing on stillwaters, learning the basics and then mastering them (sort of) until i decided i wanted to start fishing specifically for bigger fish. So i picked the ledger rod for a few years, learnt to feeder fish and simple ledger. This gave me a taste for carp and so i progressed. From the bottom up. I still mainly fish with a simple rig, 7-8'' coated braid, 20'' rig tubing, lead clip system and a 6-8 wide gape tied with a standard knotless knot. No shrink tubing or rig rings most of the time and this setup accounts for probably 3/4's of my catches. Only when the situation deems it nessacary do i fish a different, advanced setup. Keeping it simple keeps it enjoyable. Who wants to spend all their time tying awkard rigs and burning them self on the steam from the kettle. I know what id rather be doing, catching fish!

Mine too...at a micro level I thought to go some way to resolving the problem on one of the waters I fish by eating my way through as many of the stockie carp I can. However I only lasted one session (well not even that) it was so crushingly boring! 2 hours into the session I picked up up a lure rod and started catchin' pike.

dunno what you and Dales mean.. slave to fashion.. :P:sun::camera:

But some times new can be good. I got around to trying those Nash Chain Reactions you were on about. I was a little sceptical and they are a little pricey which is off putting but a tub used in certain situations can be very useful and last a while.

I only use them when I want pin point accuracy, obviously using them gives you the anti tangle properties of a bag and they seem to work well for putting some attraction near the hook bait. But the winner for me is if you want to drop your bait in a certain spot and you are having an off day you can reel in if you miss the spot and cast again, with a bag it would have started to melt. I know you can clip up etc for accuracy, but most of the time I like casting by eye. I still prefer my own PVA bag concoctions but I can see when the chains would give you a different advantage. Plus they are quick and easy to use when you can't be asked to make a bag up and again don't melt when you are standing in the pouring rain preparing to cast.

So not everything picked up by magpies is rubbish but at the same time everything that glitters is not gold. So keep posting your little finds :D

Stephen
