Giving sea fishing a go, probably lure

I am heading over to the IoW for a week from Friday, and fancy have a go at fishing the salty stuff. I have recently started fresh water lure fishing using a shimano travel rod, spec is

TEXAXS3033H length 3.00/3.30m casting weight 20-50g

Reel wise I have a SHAKESPEARE K2 FD7000 POWERPLAY (sorry for the caps copied from a site), or my fresh water spinning stuff that’s loaded with 20 lb braid.

We are staying around St Helens, where there’s a rocky shore, reef around the corner, beech, and harbour. So quiet varied. Time wise it’s likely to be early morning, or evening for a few hours, more to relax than to catch monsters.

Will any of the above kit be usable for gentle sea fishing, and with the large capacity reel what line should I put on it? I do have a spool of 30 lb mono laying around that a friend gave to me earlier this year, and had wondered about putting that on the K2. Also what lures should I get, the exage above is new so haven’t got any in its casting weight. Lastly are there any other types of coastal fishing open to me with the above. Have been lent a beech caster that I can take as well, but it’s a bit inconvenient to fit in the car.

Cheers

Jon

15lb mono line is fine for beach fishing.

Lure-wise you need long slim minnow shaped lures.

You don't need to cast out far, but as with most lure fishing, fishing to features is the secret of success (ie where the waves boil around a gulley or rocks etc).

Although a longer rod is preferable for lure fishing off the beach, freshwater lure rods will be fine.

Cheers for that, just the info I want. Theres a lure specialist near to me, hopefully I can get over there before I go away.

Andy Lush will give you all the information that you need, and make sure that you leave the shop with lures that catch fish.

If you've a couple of hours to spare!!

I travelled down in to his den the other week, took a rather blistering phone call from my wife to get me out. Really nice guy, very knowledgeable and helpful.
