My first eel

Excellant Eel, well done. A four pound plus eel is an excellant in any specialist anglers books. I would echo the advise given already, placing them on their back does calm them down, but do not do it for excessive periods. They are ok out of the water for four or five minutes so stay calm and take your time. Obviously try and keep the eel moist to avoid slime drying as this will harm the eel, although it does make for fun when trying to handle them!!. As for getting slime off your gear theres not miracle answer, best to let it dry then rub it off.

Thanks all for tha advice - and don't worry about the name mixup. I might be having a dabble on the harder eel water on the complex again next week if so I'll post any news.

Good luck Rob.

If it is an unknown water try fishing 3 rods (if allowed) one on worms over dead maggots.

One a small deadbait tail-hooked combined with a heavy feeder filled with fish-based catfood. Thirdly, if allowed again, a small tail-hooked livebait caught at the venue.

Take note of which method is the most successful and switch the other 2 rods to that method. Don't be surprised if the eels turn the tables though. ALWAYS keep an open mind on method and bait. The wide-headed predatory eels can often turn onto worms in preferrence to fish baits, not so much the narrow-heads.

Good hunting...

Best,
