Strange catch

Last week I went for a nice relaxing days fishing for roach, half way through the day I though that Moby dick was on the end of my line as was only using 4lbs main line and 2lbs hook link and size 18hook.

I took my time and doing my best to keep what was on the end out the lilies, when I got quite a shock to see a pike on the end of my line (4.5lbs) when I eventually landed the pike my first though was

that I had hooked a small fish and the pike had taken it, but no the hook was in the top lip still with three maggots. :o :o :o

I was just wondering what strange things have happened to other people.

I once hooked a 3lb chub neatly in the top lip. It didn't fight much though because it had beed dead for at least a week.

You done well to land it on a light hooklength but Pike do seem to like maggots and I have had a number of them before but not as many as when I use worms.

I once caught and landed a Barbel (on rod and line using standard trotting tactics) without sticking a hook in the fish at all.

How?

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

Think my biggest maggot caught pike is over 9lb - biggest on float fished lobs is over 14lb. Strangest 'catch' was probably last year when I landed a 11½lb mirror with the hook no where near the fish. The line was wrapped around its lowere jaw several times - enough to get significant 'purchase' in order to land it. Can only think it swam through the line and then twisted several times when I 'struck' - very weird capture.....

How?

I thought someone might ask that. :D

It was a (presumably fairly greedy and stupid fish) which had been hooked several times before, unfortunately on five of those occasions the hooks had been left in the fish, I hooked it through the eye of one of the hooks, which I obviously removed with all the others before returning it, it wasn't a particularly big fish so I don't understand why so many anglers had managed to lose it but that's how it was.

The other day I was fishing a stretch of the Severn near Bridgnorth and as the water was so low, no barbel showed. However I managed to 'hook' a pike on a worm somehow although when I eventually landed it the line was threaded through its pelvic fin and it had lassoed itself so the line went through the pelvic fin, around the fish and hooked itself back in the fin less than an inch where it first went through. I have no idea how this happened as I always had resistance on the fish!
