Inspired by those who insist upon winter being the time for pike, I tried again this week, again NOT in one of the big lakes, result...my daughters eldest with a 14 1/2lb first deadbait caught pike, it took a submerged float rig lamprey. All I had to do was say, 'keep your rod up', 'let her run off the clutch when she needs to'...and I did the netting...

it is never to cold to catch pike and they are all ways hungry and can be caught on all sorts of fish baits eels, sea fish and lake fish

The background to that post was a continuing chat about the time of year for piking, and my assertion that winter isn't a good time on the large glacial lakes (nor most of the Scottish lochs), this fish wasn't caught in a big glacial water. They may be caught in winter by some anglers, that I have to accept. And yes they can be caught on 'eels and lake fish', however here are forbidden to use them.

I don't believe that the winter makes it too cold to catch them, it's not that straightforward, and I have caught them (and other species) through ice bore holes in other places where the mean winter temperatures are far lower than here. I am strongly of the opinion that most of the pike move out of shore casting range in deep winter on the big waters too.

Emma,

I agree with you on the winter vs summer. My experience, in a much different environment, is that pike fishing is not much fun in the hot of the summer. Not because of the fish. Where pike live in concentrations so do the MOSSYS. Mossys are the state bird of Minn. After the first hard frost is the "best" - for the angler. I've never been pike fishing without the support of a guide in a boat. Then only a few times - so my opinion is really of little value.
