I've caught loads of pike in the height of summer over the years and never had any deaths or any remotely looking like dying. Blimey if their treated correctly and put back asap there should be no problem no matter how hard they fight or how warm it is. If one should look a bit iffy just let it revive before letting it float off. Rather than mauling them to revive them they're better propped in an upright position and left alone to slowly recover.

I can vouch for that, I had one last season in June from Wingham - 18lb plus with a liking for fake corn, I ended up taking three other Anglers rigs out of it as well.

It lead me a merry dance on a 1 1/4lb Avon and 8lb line in spite of me playing it as hard as I could.

I really thought it wasn't going to go back after it just lay on the surface so I propped it up between two bank sticks, it stayed there for an age but eventually swam off of its own accord.

I've lure fished for summer pike for over fifty years. It wasn't until the appalling winter style of poor bite detection dead-bait only pikers turned their attention to summer pike that I have seen a truly tragic decline in pike stocks on the Broads.

Phone, if we are talking in celsius then I cant think of any water that would get that warm but if Fahrenheit yes then I then again I never take water temperature readings and so some one might be able to correct me. In relative terms the UK may be small, but from one end of the country to the other water temperatures can vary considerably and as Emma pointed out she could be fishing a deep cold glacial lake while I could be fishing a warm pond for Rudd down in the south.
If Phone was talking Celcius then 50-55 degrees is getting on for scalding hot :o

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Interesting topic. Some on here obviously feel very strongly on the subject.

I've just got into piking and it is a bit disheartening to think that it should maybe be paused for the summer periods. But if it really does harm the fish I wouldn't fish for them.

But then on small rivers the oxygen levels should be higher than stillwaters surely?

But then as a beginner to piking it may be best to fish for a species when they are at their peak and not at their most critical.

Hmm don't know what i'll do when it gets to summer. Any suggestions?

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

Get your lures out Dave

Pike are very active in summer. They race around burning lots of energy, chasing active prey in temperatures that raise their metabolism. Its a vicious circle for them.

They'll wolf down a deadbait so damn quick that even the best, most sensitive bite detection may not be fast enough, resulting in deephooking.

Not being funny but in summer, think of them as oversized 3" Perch and you'll get my drift ;)

Mr Waller, I know exactly what you mean.
