Article in AT today with Terry Lampard Bream fishing. The man catches some phenomenal fish but in article, gets to lake, takes out boat to find a feature to fish to, baits up feature from boat and then rows out baits to position them from boat. Sits in bivvy and rows out again in morning to see bait has been eaten so baits up again and catches 2 double figure Bream. Total time spent fishing is three days. Is there skill in this i.e casting in would be a start, or is it just having the time to spend on the bank. This isn't a dig at Terry Lampard but to me there doesnt seem to be a lot of actual angling involved, or maybe Im missing the point.

It isn't a style that would suit me but if it suits him, that is fine. As long as it is legal and doesn't get in the way of other anglers, I am comfortable with folks fishing a style that suits them.

I have the same problem with things I read about 2 week trips to France in search of big carp when they can easily go a week without a single bite. No thanks.

I suspect that in this case the real skill would be in:

a) finding a water that contains the double figure bream concerned.

B) finding the location in which the fish feed

c) presenting them with an appropriate bait in such a way as to tempt the bite

Casting to the swim would probably make it more difficult to present the bait accurately.

But it should be borne in mind that catching a double figure bream is quite an outstanding achievement.

There is a lake near me where very similar tactics are used for carp. A 100acre lake! Their is definately an element of skill as some people have phenominal results and some people fish for weeks and catch nothing!

I have fished with similar tactics where the skill for me involve rowing around with my head under the water eek.gif and looking for the smallest and least fished 'features'. This is a ridiculously weedy lake, the skill is bait choice, quantity for situation, presentation and definately location. If only it was as easy as randomly rowing out to anywhere chuck the lot over the side and then wait for the results!!

Each to his own, i must admit i couldn't fish like this week in week out and IMO to do so is quite sad. I need some sort of action!!

No skill at all in my book.

You say time spent fishing is three days, I say time spent fishing 0 days, time spent reeling in fish 20 mins I would have thought. Maybe he cannot cast, LOL.

I totally agree their is no skill in doing it, (well rowing in a straight line is quite dificult for me and in a wind i'm terrible). The skill is catching fish!!! The skill of fishing isn't just being able to cast!

I would have thought that a national paper like the Angling Times should promote angling that a reasonable majority of its readership could relate to, and possibly try for themselves, they are always going on about a lack of junior anglers in the sport and how to get more involved. I have fished for a lot of years and always bought the AT but find some of the specialist features, and the lengths they go to to catch a fish to see there name in print unbelievable.

Hi all

To me this is a type of fishing but it just removes a lot of skill and watercraft, which is what fishing is all about.

What do you think of this?

In the US, for television production purposes similar tactics are used to insure a successful tv show. These fellow have not earned their reputation following these practices alone. It is simply a demonstration of certain aspects of thier skills. They are most assuredly certifiable good all around anglers.

Maybe that was the case in this article.

it often makes me lol when they print these articles about experts taking a water apart,

then when you actually read the article you find they have used baits that are banned to anyone else, and have fished at times no one else can ie nights + they have fished in parts of the lake no one else has access to.

yes ok they have to be good to get to where they are but surely the aim of these articles should be to instruct people how to catch from these venues .

not just to say well i caught ten tench over 6lb so anyone should be able to do it.which is the impression they give a lot of the time
