Hardy's? Are you talking about the farmers field downstream of Newark Piscatorials?

 

If you are, then the lower peg numbers are the ones that are popular for barbel.

 

Any bait works but may I suggest simply casters and maggots. If it is the venue I am thinking about then there is no night fishing allowed so big baits probably wont do so well.
