Nature is not "cruel" and has no notion of "mercy", what you are doing is anthropomorphism.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

the bears

That got me wondering

We have fished in the USA in bear country (that's black bears, not grizzlies) and Norma had a close encounter with a black bear, which fled. We accepted there was a slight risk, but fished anyway, with that heightened sense of awareness that such conditions bring..

Further north there are grizzlies, which not only eat fish, but potentially might eat the odd angler also.

Not once did we encounter, or hear of, American anglers demanding a "bear cull" - do such people exist ?

...or is the American psyche such that anyone making a fuss about bears is regarded as a wimp - and not a very keen fisherman if put off by a bear or two?

Wonder if it's our Elton who said this and if so whether he has changed his mind on the danger posed by big Carp to Otters after reading this thread.

Could this be the reason that Otters, may and I say may attack the odd Carp. Are they not just trying to protect there family from Carp or Barbel that may attack there offspring.

I want a cull to remove all the Carp and save the Otter pups.

This is the third fish farm Mark has had to close in the past decade due to otters eating his stock.

Dull pillock!......deserves everything he suffers

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

It’s a major, major problem. It’s like releasing wolves next to a sheep farm.

No, it's like breeding sheep in the middle of a wolf enclosure and taking no steps to protect them.

One of the main culprits in filling our waters with bland, ugly, fast growing carp is Simmonds, ruining many natural waters in the process. Nice one, otters :)

Conservation work for otters, which started in the 1970s, concentrates mainly on protecting and improving river and wetland environments. The expansion of populations that we see today is due to natural colonisation, as we do not stock or reintroduce otters.

Worth repeating, not that anyone listens...

What is it with you lot? Don't you know that fish are in the waters just for the benefit of anglers? They have no other purpose, they only exist for our pleasure. Anything that tries to interfere with that, should be annihilated.

Huh, call yourselves anglers? <_<:whistling:

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

That about sums it up John, I think for a certain section of people who fish that is there opinion and belief. Very sad :(

You know I have a soft spot for ornamentals but if an Otter wants to dine on them. Then that's fine with me.

Maybe we need to stock more Otters to help control the threat of ornamentals :D
