Otter friend or foe

the sand eel is swiftly disappearing as far as i can see ,instead of cows eating cows and sheep in their dry food now the protein is fish based

not sure who this lot are but its the first i came across with the figures ,400,000 tons seems a bloody lot of sandeels

I'm not sure how heavy the average sand eel is. Tried to google it but drew a blank. Assuming that the average weight was 25g that would work out at 1,600,000,000 sand eels. I guess that would feed a lot of puffins. Edited by corydoras

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

dude,

Very thoughful. Wondering if you had a typo in the picture caption where you say, "Dead Barbel in result of an otter attack! " Should your exclaimation point be a question mark?

Cory,

Worms would ask, "is that British billions"?

The UK changed to short scale billions 37 years ago in 1974, but some folks need time to adjust to new-fangled ideas. I should have said 1.6x109. No ambiguity that way ;)

Hi Guys

I have done a little Blog on this topic if anyone is interested. Blog a address in the signature.

I'll just say this. There is nothing "sad" about an otter eating fish, in the same way as there is nothing "sad" about a lion killing a wildebeest or a spider catching a fly in it's web.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Cory,

Ha ha, I'd still have to get Worms to help.

As for your second point - - - it's almost as good as sex to set down to a rare T-bone. He!l with the lions.

Come to think about it, nowdays, it's better!

Ya'll sure it ain't just that these days sex is rarer than your T-bone ;)

Read your link, Worms, very interesting, I fished Slapton Ley for a week in 1953, and again for a week in 1961. There have obviously been some profound changes in the fish population, which I will pursue in a different thread. (Have you got access to Kennedy's paper ? Would appreciate a link)

The broad thrust of Riley's paper as far as otters are concerned, is that they will take whatever fish are most abundant and most easily caught. No change there.

Hi Dave, sorry, missed your post, been a bit hectic recently. Kennedy's 1996 paper here

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Wonder if it's our Elton who said this and if so whether he has changed his mind on the danger posed by big Carp to Otters after reading this thread.

Elton says...

6:50pm Fri 29 Jan 10

It is a well known fact that greedy carp eat small otter pups when they enter the water for the first time.

Often the carp will shoal around the entrance to the otter nest in January / February.

In a few well documented cases the dog otter has attacked the offending carp in an effort to save the pup.

Could this be the reason that Otters, may and I say may attack the odd Carp. Are they not just trying to protect there family from Carp or Barbel that may attack there offspring.

I want a cull to remove all the Carp and save the Otter pups.
