Otter friend or foe

I don't feel guilty about fishing, but I recognise that fish have a niche in nature that transcends the needs of anglers.

Angling exists because of the fish, not the other way round.

John.

Precisely.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Gozzer,

Angling (anglers) are sportsmen not intended, execpt by ritual, to be participating in survival. Fishing (fishermen) are for profit or for the pot.

Cory,

"Transcends" is a religious word. (??) precisely what - what Gozzer said. Re-read please! I don't believe anyone or anything provides a "nitch". You do or you don't.

Who said that?

You provide a perfect niche for Demodex folliculorum the human follicle mite. These litte arachnids are found in the eyelash follicles of almost every human being. They can exist nowhere else.

Phone,

We seem to be having communication problems again mate. Anglers are fishermen, but not all fishermen are anglers.

And if we are going into word definitions, then

Niche: The role or function of an organism or species in an ecosystem.

Transcend: to rise above or go beyond the limits of something.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

A couple more definitions,

Fish = food

Otter = fish eating predator.

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Gozzer,

We? you have a mouse in your pocket?

I put up a definition for ANGLER vs FISHERMAN. While is "see" your double talk I don't see a definition to differientate the two in two dimensions. You've said "they are the same" it seems to me. I guess you would expand "fishermen" to netters, spears, bow and arrow, etc (although many consider themselves sportsmen. The MAIN difference is fishermen gather fish for survival, profit or without a rod and reel. It's easy to use on a "fishing forum" when necessary. Often I error and call you (collectively) a "fisherman" when actually you are an "angler". We all make that mistake.

OK, I'll expand further as you must feel it is necessary. Anglers, must be sportsmen of one sort or another using only a rod and reel to "angle" (at least in their eyes). Usually, anglers employ self imposed "rules" of fair play established by like-minded participants (sp). Fishermen, for the most part obey laws.

I like "niche" (even if I can't spell) just fine. Unless you've received some "inside dope" from someone - I know of no creature exempt from extermination. No one or no thing has a niche to survival.

Cory,

While shallow for you - you've given a perfect example. What's your example bug going to do without it's host's niche? Earlier, I liked your "dino" example also.

Right now, at this moment in time, on this planet, we make most of the rules. At least the artifical rules.

Gozzer,

When you decide to go fishing and want to practice C&R - - - - - what other purpose do they serve? I'm already at the top of the food chain.

I don't feel even a hint of guilt.

Phone

put away your gun then go a wandering in the wilderness and then realise your far from the top of the foodchain :D
