A Fishy Halloween

This tale was written by Jerry Brown - CAG (Carp Anglers Group) member from the northern US and put here with his permission.

*****************************************

All souls night, the more ancient Walpugis night which in itself is a bastardization of the ancient Roman Allpigus night. This taken from the Roman practice of conquering lands to find new places to fish for the dreaded Red Eyed Carp. This night has a history and meaning that can only be hinted at in the pale celebrations of man.

If you venture from the false security of your hearth and home and find yourself near water, you may see in the distance, that which is mistakenly known as witch fires. In fact these are fires made by a breed of men and women known as the CAG, which is derived from the ancient Roman Centurion marking SIG and even older terms best left undisturbed.

On this night, when the moon shines full, not unlike the night soon approaching, these practitioners of ancient arts take foul smelling concoctions and the best equipment know to man to do battle with this denizen of the deep. Said to be related to the elder gods mentioned only in the Book of the Dead and the foul, Necrinomicon, these creatures only appear when certain circumstances of moon and stars arrive. Those who study these black arts constantly try to find combinations of ingredients and skill to bring these creatures to do battle.

Toe of toad, eye of newt,

An old catfisherman's ancient left boot.

Seed of hemp, maize and wheat,

Boiled and simmered over medium heat.

Other ingredients handed down by word of mouth only to those most trusted members of this eons old society.

If you should venture toward these 'Witch Fires' you most likely will see only a fisherman shivering like a chawowa at a monster truck show or worse. Signs of a monumental struggle, pieces of arcane equipment, broken and scattered, as if by some monumental hand, crushed. Water flung beyond all proportion to the winds and tides. And worst of all, drag marks leading from the water and back. These marks being not the marks of man.

Who knows why the members of this secret society do these unnatural acts. And to what end, to what end?? jblovecraft

But Wait!!!! Listen! Off in the distance. THUMP/SWISH, THUMP/SWISH. As if the beating of some monumental heart coming closer, closer, closer still, unrelenting in the darkness. Unspeakable power. THAT WHICH CANNOT BE NAMED ALOUD.!!!! Silence, and there was no more.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE. jb

Sounds like a mixture for groundbait. Eye of Newt?
