One year on

Pangolin

Recommended Posts

A whole year had passed since my brace of double-figure barbel from the Wye at Ross, so I decided to go back and have another go. To my amazement, it happened again:

Oct2011003.jpg

this one was the best-conditioned fish I've ever caught, of any species, and weighed in at 12lb.

It came from the public stretch, below the Royal Hotel, and took two halibut pellets on a hair-rig.

You meet all kinds of animal on the riverbank.

Nice one

Will you back next year? Or is that a silly question :D

Yes a nice fish, but what’s with this shoving fingers into the mouths of fish for a photo, is it some kind of perversion that’s passed me by?

Noticed it on the odd photo, carp seem to be atractive for this behaviour but don’t see too many pike anglers doing it.

Respect Pangolin but your pic just shows how deceptive photo's are as I wouldn't have said that fish was over 8lb, it looks slim'ish (no belly) and not very long.

Fair comment, although a little green-tinged, I expect! Perhaps you mistakenly think I am a small specimen, myself... I had to hold the fish against my chest because it wasn't keen to pose: thumb in the mouth for that reason too (stops the fish shaking its head). Compared to last year's it was a very deep-bellied fish: took 15 mins to land, even with the Grey's Prodigy rod.

I will go back again, next year, if not before: I recommend the Royal Hotel, which you can book with Tesco vouchers, too. It doesn't own the fishery, but it's right by the river

No green tinge i'm afraid, my PB is 14lb 8 ounces B) . Being honest the size of the fish was pure luck, it could just as easily been a 2lber. As I said your fish doesn't look it's weight, i'm not trying to say it didn't weigh 12lb but just pointed out how decieving pic's can be ;) .

Pays to hold a fish at arm's length and use a wide angle lens, like the carp boys do  !
