Dear Snigger Stevie O,

How do you expect anyone to hear your call at 1.00pm in midweek......we can't all just keep pushing the buttons from home.

Besides, most eelers are not able to speak properly until the sun has gone down....and then not joined up talk.!!!!!

Good to hear that the prod was OK, look forward to your company again old son...maybe your re-joining will prompt the Spac-e-man to book a fish-in for us to all attend.

Yours With Respect.....

Dear Dances...

You should get jobs that fits round the eeling and rhetoric, get the priorities right!! Only kidding, we all have to earn a crust somehow these days.

The call to retort was due to the fact that no-one had posted since Tues. at 11.09pm, that was Hedgehog looking for something surreal. Lonely life this freelancing!

Surely the club does not hang around waiting for old snigger to 'officially' re-join to organise a fish-in, didn't know I'd left the club to be honest, can someone put me to rights?

Hope you've had a chance to get out, weather n' all, had a go myself last night on my canal, nowt but bream and perch to the worms!

A fish is a fish though...

Best,

Lads,

The best of british, conditions look reet enough.

I've just discovered a small water near home that is by a goit running from the Irwell. It's silty, shallow and full of small roach and perch, mmmmmmm! it's beggin' for it.

Best,

As the General Secretary of the ESG i suppose its about time i jioned in on the thread and confirmed some of the points already explained by the lads.

Tony (BT) told me about the thread whilst discussing some eel conservation issues on the phone so that in it'self goes to show that there is a lot healthier relationship between the NAC and the ESG than most outside anglers would expect.

I have been in the ESG since 1985, so was not involved directly in the initial formation of the group, this was as stated earlier, a split from the NAC. This happened around about 1978 / 79. There were personnel clashes at the time over methods being used to catch specimen eels, but as happens, after the split, in future years these members (Some from the NAC and others from the ESG )eventually moved on and i believe that those concerned are not seriously involved in secimen eel angling at this current time, certainly not in the ESG anyway.

The NAC and the newly formed ESG both retained their selective membership criteria initially . Following the demise of the BEAC in the mid 90's The NAC has now opted to go for the all comers / open door policy, the ESG has always retains a selective criteria. Thats choice and upto the specific group and from the ESG viewpoit is based on attaining our own group aims.

Yes some guys are members of both groups, the others just the one, thats not a problem now. Years ago this would have been unthinkable but as Steve and Tony say, the early hassles have now been put to one side and there is now an excellant rapore between the two groups, and long may it continue.

Refernces to Sidley : John and mick set up the BEAC in 1980 (Iwas member 11 !!) he latter applied to jion the ESG and was a member during the mid 80's, he latter applied to jion the NAC ( he had i beleive applied on numerous occasions during the late 70's to jion the NAC but had been turn down for whatever reasons). Later whilst it was not allowed for historical reason for NAC members to jion the ESG the ESG got wind of a further NAC application, he had to choose - he opted for the NAC. This situation no longer applies as we well know that serveral members belong to both groups.

Yes there are two eel specialist groups, the third `Society' is the ECS (Eel conservation Society) i would agree with the earlier description of it as the political wing of the Eel specialists, Yes i take a lead role but it is a forum of anglers and without the support from some of the NAC lads namely Steve R and Tony plus other ESG lads, Steve Pitts and Nick Rose in particular representing us all at the SACG / SAA it would not be as effective in working to put over our case foward for eel conservation etc. Yes it was a big step for some of us to take and sit around the table to once again talk and collectively put our efforts into eel conservation after all the previous bickering but we did it. And now its working bloody well!.

As for the groups jioning together again, i dont see it as a issue, we each have our own views on what we are doing and how we do it, we dont throw rocks at each other and we cooperate strongly on conservation issues so i see no need to change.

Paul williams asked the question regarding ESG membership, the ESG has a website, thanks to assistance of Elton Murphy here at anglersnet and the SACG Links. Address is http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/sacg/esg/ which gives details of the group, its activites and contact address's and E Mails including our membership secretary (Keith Bradbury). The website could do with an update to reflect more accurately our efforts towards Eel conservation, but overall its an invaluble tool for informing people.

Yes we welcome applications from new members, as long as they are keen, experianced and active in eel fishing. If anyone want further info use any of the contact address's on the website or please feel free to E Mail me.

Thanks to the lads who contributed the replies regarding methods / rigs etc

Regards Clive Dennison

(General Secretary Eel Study Group)

Dances,

Have a smashin' hol. mate, speak when you are back...

Have sent my cheque off to Mark, sorry for the delay, minds going with old age, must be the old WW2 wound, tee hee!!

Another sessh locally on the canal brought a 2.2 to worms, must give it more attention, I've been meaning to for some years, it's 10 minutes walk from ours! Funny how the waters with potential on your doorstep get ignored.

The shallow water by the river goit beckons attention soon as well.

Haven't been on the 'Common 5's' water as yet, but will be very soon. Will report in on anything exciting.

Best,
