Time to be serious , angling politics. Usually the signal for everyone to turn off, shut down, skip a page et. etc.

Tell me, is it possible to put an umbrella organisation over all the different specialist angling organisations in order to present any prblems, aims and objective to the powers that be? Also is it needed bearing in mind the nature of the sport/hobby and the fact that the larger groups fight their own battles when problems arrise, i.e.The close season on rivers.

Elton,

For the purpose of this discussion let's stick with coarse fishing,I think this in itself will be difficult enough.

If the response is good perhaps it can be opened up further down the line.

Regards,

Steve.

Sharp Ray! Steve,When there were a lot of all round anglers in the sport I think it would have been possible. Now with many of the factions now being so insular I sadly think not.

You've hit upon something there, Budgie. At the moment, not only do many anglers tend to 'specialise' in one species, but there also appears to be a fair amount of unnecessary "we fish for species x, so we don't speak to those who fish for species y" going on.

I think some of these fundemental barriers need taking down before the prospect of unity will evolve.

Best wishes,

Elton

To all: I posed this Question on another bulletin board ( before I saw the light and changed to Anglers Net) At the time it was suggested to me that anglers being apathetic would not really be interested in such bodies as they have to voluntarily join them.

Prefering to just go fishing.

If all anglers who bought a rod licence, paid a small fee on top of the £19 to fund such an organisation then perhaps we could become "united" and also have certain votes or rights.

But who would head such an organisation?

Also would anglers want to pay extra for such representation, or indeed would we all want to vote on the everyday issues related to our sport, my answer is yes.

As it is you can pay £25-£50 for a premiership football ticket for entertainment that lasts for 90 minutes,so £19 for a whole season is cheap really.

At the moment, Fox hunting is in the spotlight and will no doubt soon be banned.

Next on the agenda will be fishing, and if we are not all "together" by that stage then we will very quickly fall by the wayside too.

The time to do something is now, not when the spotlight is on us.We are the biggest participant sport and if we all move together on this then there will be no bigger organisation in the whole country, who then could challenge or endanger our sport!

Only last week on Tight Lines( sky tv) Keith Arthur answered a question from a sea angler regarding trawler fishing as the trawlers now come in so close to the shore that it is affecting beach fishing. Keith answered by saying that sea anglers could not do anything about it as they didn't pay for a licence.Food for thought.

What is the biggest angling body in the UK at the moment? I'm afraid I dont know, but what I do know is it will not be big enough also our time in the spotlight will be on us far quicker than any of us would like to think.

Hi Steve.

The Answer is yes, and it is sorely needed.

I think it would be fair to say that the social mix in angling is greater than any other sport/hobby. Rolls's parked next to the metros in the carpark. Alongside this you have the mixed elements of carp/predator/trotters/feedermen etc. and barbelers like us.

In my experience most societies/clubs/associations etc. move along as far as the NON paid helpers/committee allow. Even within the BS my view is that the increased numbers/members have exerted an inordinate amount of pressure on your team to keep things running smoothly and seamlessly. Unlike most sports that have governing bodies, angling seems to rely on unpaid helpers to oil the wheels.

Once someone is brave enough to comit the resources/ability/managementskills and professionalism necessary to promote angling and the associated aspects then I am sure that the disparate aspects will be overcome.

From what I have seen of the BS organisation the planning/ideals could apply to all aspects of the sport, but only if backed up with sufficient expertise and resources.

Many anglers are semi retired etc. and also professionally skilled in marketing and management. These people would be willing to contribute. But not for free.

The opportunity is there to combine the mummurs from angling into a strong coherent voice.

Hold on.. i thought The 'Specialist Anglers Consevation Group' were the Umbrella group? Why have "Chairman Steve" and the 'Barbel Society committee' never joined with all the other specialist groups in endorsing the group and code? including Carp Society, Manchester Carp Group, Pike Anglers' Club Of G.B. & Ireland Tenchfishers, Perchfishers, British Eel Anglers' Club, British Carp Study Group, Lure Anglers' Society Of G.B, Catfish Conservation Group, Eel Study Group, Barbel Study Group, Zander Anglers' Club, Chub Study Group, Barbel Catchers' Club, National Anguilla Club, Eel Conservation Society,Roach Fishers, and the Norfolk Anglers' Conservation Society. There seems to be 'one' missing!!.... rolleyes.gif

RAYMOND,

I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN YOU WOULD BE BRINGING THIS UP, DON'T YOU EVER GO TO SLEEP ? I'M JUST OFF TO WORK NOW BUT I WILL GIVE SOME ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTION LATER ALTHOUGH I WOULD RESPECTFULLY POINT OUT THIS IS NOT THE FORUM TO OUTLINE DETAILED B.S. POLICY AND I'M SURE MANY OF THE READERS WOULD BE BORED. A FULL ACCOUNT OF OUR CURRENT POSITION WILL BE GIVEN IN THE NEXT EDITION OF BARBEL FISHER.

I WAS HOPING CONTRIBUTERS TO THIS FORUM MIGHT ACTUALLY GIVE A DIFFERENT SLANT ON THE ORIGINAL POSTED QUESTION JUST IN CASE ANY NEW RELEVANT POINTS HAVE BEEN OVERLOOKED.

BEST FISHES
