ANGLING UNITY, IS IT POSSIBLE ?

dave K may well be right but don't let the names put you off. NFA (National Federation of Anglers) does nor mention match fishing, while SACG (Specialist Anglers Conservation Group) only mentions specialists.

Dave, I am an ordinary angler, ask Graham E.

I joined SACG becuase they were involved with fighting to protect our fishing and our environment. Yes I try and target bigger fish, but with my angling any fish is a bonus.

Steve makes a valid point and I quote "I'll add this thought,a major issue to one group may be a long way down the agenda and list of priorities of the umbrella organisation."

That has always been a concern with SACG Steve. That is why it is important that member groups are represented at our meetings. The members in SACG determine priorities for the group and we all try to work togther to get the best person handling any particular problem. Even some of the relatively small single specie groups attend every meeting, and they do not feel that their agenda gets pushed to one side.

I understand the fear, SACG had the same problem with the NFA, for many years. Things there have changed and we are now affiliated to the NFA, with representation at significant levels. That can only be good for angling and for unity, which is where we came in. YES IT IS POSSIBLE - YOU ONLY HAVE TO TRY!

P.S. When are you going to answer your own question or offer me some dates for a meet so that we can get past the history and move on to the future together?

I agree Lyn. However if this Forum is instrumental in getting the various organisations around the table it will have been worth it!

Is anyone here prepared to set a date to sit at a table and just talk through any of these various comments made on this thread or indeed any comments not made.

Lets make a start !

Steve,

Let me assure you our differences with the SACG have nothing whatsoever to do with ego.Our committee acts with far more thought, integrity and respect for the membership and I would expect nothing less from the SACG.

In a few months time, the structure of the SACG is likely to change with the impending merger with NASA and we all await the outcome.

We simply remain to be convinced the SACG is the " umbrella" to which we should subscribe.

Alan is well aware of this and as I've said before, a detailed article explaining our stance will be in our next magazine. In fact, along with putting this mag. together with the help of my colleagues, I'm actually working on the article now.

You state that angling is under so much threat, can you elaborate. Do you envisage an outright ban,or will we suffer a slow lingering death as fisherman just cease to exist with the passage of time.

If your fears are justified, and we do find ourselves in the glare of the public spotlight then we will be judged by the worst aspects of our sport and this is were it starts to get difficult.

I doubt if you would get agreement between twenty let alone twenty thousand on what exactly constitutes our worst practices. Therein lies part of the dilemma.

A step by step death with our wings clipped by anti-anglers successfully stirring up the public. That is if cormorants or otters don't ruin many venues first!

If my fears and those of many others turn out to be unjustified then getting angling unified will be a nice bonus. On the other hand if the situation is as serious as some of us fear then if we don't unify we're sunk. Either way we have nothing to lose.

Steve, you and all the others on the commitees of the various bodies have a tremendous responsibility to the rest of us.

Quite apart from anything else if angling is restricted in some way history will judge you very harshly. The reasons for failing to unite will be totally forgotten.

Please don't let us down, get talking!

I say again, anyone brave enough to make the first move in this stalemate of words, and set a date for an open, over the table discussion to try and start this whole thing off.

OK ... I'll offer the first 50 quid towards booking a place where these problems can be thrashed out by the parties concerned.

Does that break the stalemate?

Ian.

Hi everyone

I personally dont think angling will get banned for the simple reason of money, lost taxes and job losses. If the goverment where to ban angling it would loose out on millions in tax, where as when hunting was supposedly banned nothing was lost . The other point of putting a couple of pound on top of your rod licience to fund an "umbrella" group would not work in my opinion because i think it would just go into some fat cats pocket(nra/goverment)and not back into fishing where its needed. Althogh the thought of a representing body is a good one provided it was run by someone with one agenda only ANGLING.

call me a cynic but thats what i think regards paul mc

Thanks for the offer. At the moment I have Saturday 5th August and Saturday 19th August clear, but will also be at the NASA conference weekend. That might be the ideal place to hold discussions,as I presume most people will have put that in their diary already.

I was going to fish the Kennet for barbel, but I guess I'll have to bring my brolly camp if we decide to meet there.

No problem Mike ... if it's at all useful the offer remains open.

All I want to see is political coherence within angling. Just take a look at how organised PETA, Pisces (CAA) etc. are in this regard.

I can't help thinking that disagreements within the angling scene are caused partly by 'the devil in the detail' and partly by age old conflicts of personality.

Perhaps it would be better for all of us to focus on what separate groups actually agree on rather than concentrating on the differences of opinion.

Cheers (& tight stuff),

Ian.
