What do you think is the most skillful part of fishing?

IMO, the most skilful part of angling depends on the type of fishing being done.

For instance, most top matchman I've spoken to regard feeding as the key to success.

As a specimen hunter (I hate the term specialist angler), I've no doubt that location is by far the biggest single factor in catching big fish. As I've posted before this falls into 3 stages: finding the venue, finding the swim and then finding the hot areas.

On the other hand, when fishing a small stream the most important skill of all is to avoid spooking the fish.

Chris mentioned casting being very important. It can be, especially when accuracy is needed. However, at close range it ceases to be a major factor unless you need to cast to tiny holes in the weed etc.

I agree with Shaca in that experience certainly helps. However, some of the most experienced anglers I know are also the worst! Time alone doesn't make an expert - it's how much the angler learns and puts into practice that's important.

So to sum up, I reckon the most important skill depends very much on the type of fishing being carried out. I certainly take my hat off to the top match anglers - they have skills in tackle handling way beyond me! On the other hand I find that catching specimen fish regularly is largely a matter of common sense. It's certainly a lot easier to be a successful specimen hunter than a good match angler, although there's probably not much diffence in skill between the very top anglers in each branch of the sport.

The most skilfull part is getting your nurse up at 4.00am to make the sandwiches.

long distance casting, watercraft, and bait presentation pales into insignificance.

My only complaint is that my nurse cuts the crusts off the smoked salmon sarnies to stop my hair going curly.
