This is a Selfish sport

Isn't it?

We go to the bank hoping the wife doesn't want to come, we are happy to inflict pain on the fish to get them on the bank (no matter how nice we are to them - they WILL suffer to a degree even if its just getting annoyed at being pulled away from the maggot freebies) for our enjoyment and we hate it if some schmuck has taken our favourite swim. We keep the fish out longer than absolutely necessary so that we get a photo. We don't want our chosen specialism to get too popular (barbus catcher beware) and we can't wait to get the photo's back to show our mates.

Its always ME Me Me!!!

And yet we love to:

SHARE our experiences (its not gloating is it?)

Share our knowledge (we all like to force them on our kids and other fisherman - the RIGHT way to fish)

Share our stories (boast about the one that got away)

etc

and its not at all for the worship of our fellow anglers that we talk about the BIGGEST fish we caught or the LONGEST fight. Honest!

But, come to think about it...sod you lot, I'm going fishing! rolleyes.gifbiggrin.gif

Don't take this the wrong way mate but:

Putting something like "we are happy to inflict PAIN on the fish" isn't very clever seeing as its been proved that fish don't feel pain BUT its one of the main arguments the anti's use against our sport & they do "lurk" on sites like this looking for ammo to use against us!! frown.gif

As for the rest of your thread yes there are anglers like that but i'd rather help out an angler than turn my back on them especially if its a youngster who needs the help!!

Ok, pain, no, but discomfort for sure.

Hey - I'm not anti- angling but I'm willing to see both sides of the story. I'm sure that applies to every angler on here - that we all appreciate that there are downsides its just that we believe them to be sufficiently inconsequential compared to the fun and enjoyment we get out of the sport.

What's a forum if its not to see both sides of this sport? Please don't flame me for making a perfectly valid (if not entirely accurate) point.

The rest of my thread is a tongue in cheek look at how most of the anglers I know approach the sport - Of course I agree that we all tend to help each other out whenever we can, especially the kids - there's a dad side to all of us (even those without kids like me!) smile.gif

I've just arrived home from work and started at the bottom of the forum and worked my way up and do you know what I was really starting to unwind after a really hard day but then I came upon this crap so now I will go out into the garden to feed my fish and try to unwind all over again.

No, No, NO!

There is NO evidence of this - or even a good reason to suspect that it might be true.

All you're doing here is salving your own conscience - without any reason because angling is NOT cruel - and playing right into the anti's hands.

WHAT "both sides"? The ONLY power the anti's have over us (given the complete and utter lack of evidence that what we do is in any way cruel), is comments like this, which WILL be quoted out of context!

It is very VERY dangerous to make comments like yours, especially when you then - down the line and after the damage has been done - admit that the comments are not even "entirely accurate".

I hope that when you find your words quoted in some PETA or PISCES literature, you realise just how ill thought-out they were (and this isn't "flaming", Shaca. I suspect that's yet to start...)

Why did you get married then???

I wouldn't blame your wife if she goes fishing, hoping you don't want to come!

I'm sorry to have a go, but you come across as a bit of a miserable so-and-so. Whats wrong with taking some time to show kids the right way to fish??

Jenni.
