Angling Quotations

This is the earliest Angling Quote that I am aware of, there are fishing quotes earlier but not Angling, Quote used tentatively as this is a poem.

Interestingly I believe he is saying he has had enough of commercials (owned ponds) and is going to fish the rivers, No really I believe that is what the poem is about.

Poem

Thefor I stonde cliere out of doute,

Shall I never ponde wythe pykes store

Breame tenche. Perche never the moore.

But in rennyng ryvers that bee commone.

there will I fisshe and taake my fortune

Wyth nettys, and angle hookys,

And laye weris and sprenteris in narrowe brookys,

for loochis and lampreyes, and good layk,

I will stele off no mans a strayke.

Thanks for resurrecting this old thread!

Following recommendations, I ordered "The Magic Wheel - An Anthology of Fishing in Literature" on Saturday morning...it arrived today. It cost me 68p! (plus postage it only came to just over £3.00....)

I've only flicked through it as yet, but I can see I'm going to lose most of the rest of the day....

Janet - I've got that (bit of a sucker for angling anthologies I have around 20!). A couple that I rate even more highly are BB's Fishermans Bedside Book (Look out for a copy of the original with its 500+ pages - later editions are much shorter - I picked up a good 'reader' - 1950 reprint - off ebay for well under a tenner) and Fish, Fishing and the Meaning of Life - ed by Jeremy Paxman - in my view the best ever angling anthology - almost a whole library in one book!

Wasn't it Jeremy who said "I don't go fishing because I want to, I go because I have to"

And wasn't it in BB's book that the phrase "the pool rocked to the subturaneum passing of a fish" or something similar :) I know it was BB, but not sure which book. It inspired me to catch my first "proper" carp....13 years old, and when the pool "rocked" I cast a crust out........................Magic :)

Den

"When through the woods and forest glades I wanderAnd hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees; When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,And hear the brook, and feel the breeze;and see the waves crash on the shore,Then sings my soul..................

I like that! That's exactly how it feels at times.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Any other recommendations anyone?

Janet

Well I bet you don't get this one for 68p - leastways the postage is going to be a wee bit more!!

Not as good as the other 3 I've mentioned - and has a distinctly American bias - but enough there to keep you going for months!

One final quote before this thread slips into obscurity for another couple of years - one that any of us who have ever tried to unhook a big grayling would agree with.....

From Jon Aston's book A Dream of Jewelled Fishes...

"...holding a freshly landed grayling can feel like trying to control a cat in mid-tantrum."
