Your not sneakin up on the enemy  all your doing is going fishing and when the alarm sets off you just get up as fast as poss and pick up your rod ....Simples

Of course, but the point Danny is making is that soldiers (proper soldiers) experience the notions of sleep. sleep depravation and efficiency levels when suddenly roused from sleep like few others do, and when he read some of the things in here he would have thought (like me) 'who do this lot think they are kidding?' The answer to that of course is 'themselves'.

Anglers dress up in camouflage, wax on about fieldcraft. call their little tents 'bivvies'...yet when one compares their activities to soldiers that bristle in rejection.

We are not in the war FFS. Camoflage isn't worn by anglers to sneak up on the enemy it's just to fit in with the flora and fauna. Who gives a toss what soldiers (proper soldiers) get up to ? This is a fishing forum not a HM forces forum !

Speak for yourself, I go to play soldiers :D Creeping around and going boo is a major part of my fishing.

Emma,

You "sleep" position has no relevance. The fish has hooked itself - deep or shallow - no matter if the angler is awake or asleep. Nothing you've said suggests you can change those events.

The point you try to make is that the "fish" is at greater risk in the next 12 hours than in the next 12 seconds is not, IMO, substantially true regardless of the species. The next event that puts the fish at risk is out of the water and unhooking. (I'm discounting an otter taking your hooked fish).

If you don't agree say so. Don't nit-pick "sleep" until you've convinced at least someone other than yourself it is "harmful". Dispicable, in bad taste, and contemptible for a "proper angler" - well that is in the eye of the beholder and you're welcome to that view. The fish won't suffer more or less once hooked. You've left the fish out of your equation.

Dales, did I say I hated every minute. I was a teen. Ohh yeah - but can you do it with "freshwater" fish?

I don't believe that is the case for a minute, grown up boys wear it for reasons other than being seen by fish. The only fieldsport where camouflage clothing is of any use is shooting from a hide and possibly woodland stalking.

There is ample evidence to support this, the millions of us who catch fish without dressing up like camouflaged clowns

Hoi hope your heels are together when you said that Tigger! After completing 24 years in the forces and been around the block several times I have to say after reading some of the comments on here I was rolling around with hysterics,  some folk need to get a life and enjoy fishing for what it is...a sport & hobby.

Oh and by the way in case anyone was wondering my view on night fishing is exactly that, fishing not sleeping

Now if I could teach the Brits to close there eyes, take a deep breath, and repeat after me - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - -- "there just fish"

Good advice but despite that we will continue to try.
