Opinions?????

Just a thought, caused by the amount of responce, either on here or via the PM's.

Should, or would any one like me to start of a thread on big bream, starting right from the basics and working our collective way (other anglesr in the know, like J W, Kappa, Andero etc, might even get one ro two of my mates to contribute ( I am part of a big bream group)) through to the end result? Talking through 1 tactics, 2 types on venue that will hold BIG bream, 3 amounts of feed bait, 4 hook baits, 5 types of bites, and mayeb deviding it up into seasons? Could even be seperate threads so people don't get lost, or importantly opinions do't get missed on certain subjects. We all never stop learning, coz if you do, the bites dry up. Remember, it's all about personal opinions, what works for one, won't for another, that said, there are some MUST DO's for me...

Might be long winded, but hey, what else we goona do while its all frozen over lol...

I should start by saying I know very little about big Bream but I was talking to a Bream angler recently about river Breaming. He also rated Feb to April as the best period to target them. He targets the big Lea valley pits and he was only on the river following up on rumours of big Bream.

I had never considered this time of year for serious Bream fishing but Steve's thread would suggest it is.

Dales, Interesting what you say. I started winter fishing fro bream on the lea valley lagoons, namely nazeing meads. It was by chgance too, well kinda. back in the day when I was match fishing, often people baggged up on bream in the darks of winter, One day I just decided, sod it, I'm going fishing for Bream. I went and blanked, then spent two months walking all 130 acres looking for signs, eventually found where they were held up, and that very night had 3 fish over 12lb. that was 10 years ago and I've never looked back. Well, I have at one might have been, one that was oh so close to the record.... Still gives me nightmares as I watch the scales go round and griund to a halt 6 onces short.

If you know a venue that holds some big ish bream, give it a go. Not sure where you are, but you sound close, if so, try hatfield forest on a day ticket, lobworms on hook, and even with ice in the margins you WILL catch bream around 7-9lb and some much bigger. Its a fiver a day, but you can stay late as the all go home at 4pm and that's when the really get their heads down. Middle swims on damn wall, 70 ish yards out.

PS, this time last year, when it dropped to minus 6 during the night and ice formed in the margins, I had 22 fish over 7lb, with a couple of biggies chucked in the mix. A season ticket is £70, plus a key, but as i say, £5 for a day ticket. Very overlooked venue, and with a cafe right behind you opn til 4 ish selling great pie's and chips, what more could one want.

Steve, what time do you catch most of your winter bream?

The reason I ask is that I had planned to have a few evenings chasing bream at Wingham after winter perch fishing. Unfortunately buying and renovating a cottage has got in the way, and I've had only a day and a half fishing since early summer.

However hopefully they'll still be time for an evening or two next month.

Steve - how much bait do you generally use when fishing for the big bream in winter, and how do you deliver it?

And,

There's probably several answers to that one. If I am on a prolific water, say Ardleigh Res (sometimes catapult balls in the very deep areas as spods bait would end up everywhere), or Hatfield Forest, then I'd spod out around 15/20 small spods (4" x 1 1/2"), maybe a little less in Hatfield. Then top up via feeder, depending on the number of bites. With both these venues, I know exactly where the big shoals are this time of year, and as there are lots of roach and hybrids, to also munch on it, often one starts the other feeding, the more feed, the better.

If, on the other hand I am on a particularly hard water (you know the one), again I know where the fish live, but as we are talking 6/10 fish shoals, I may not feed at all, or a little via a feeder. It really is a case of casting it in front of them and hoping they will have your offering. Also here, it is important not to cast too often as the fish spook easy, even in 16 foot. I've been know to try a bait boat to offer up some loose samples, but I am not sure as I think the boat frightens them too.

Then there are waters like Hinchingbrooke, where there are so many fish, that are so very close (25yards) that I make up around 30 2" balls and chuck it out. The more you put in here, the more fish you get. The shoals and rediculously big and varied in size, you can catch a fish of 3lb, followed by one of 12lb and then a tench, even this time of year. The place is mental, and annoyingly frustrating.

Overall, this time of year I do change the content of my groundbait. I.e. Less food and more smell attractent/flavour this time of year, where-as, in the summer, I pack it out with 90% bread crumb, and IF I can be asked, I will liquadise around 10 loafs of white bread, with maybe one multi grain chucked in for some substance, and add fish meal, crushed hemd, molasses, and Chocalate blamonge, (trust in works) or any powder that smells/tatstes of chocalte, (except cocoa powder in the 70% range, too bitter and puts em off).

Sorry, I can't do simple answers...
