Starting out with fly fishing

I wondered if anyone can help me with some advice. Having recently retired I wanted to start a hobby which would be a bit testing to me. I used to fish as a youngster but after some thought I would like to take up fly fishing. I have nearly finished J R Hartleys book - good read - and that has helped inspire me. I wanted to get some help with casting and the basics and wondered if anyone could recommend some options and pointers. Im afraid I dont know any fly fishers hence the post. I live in Chelmsford in Essex which I dont think is well known as awash with fly rivers. Thought Id need to start on still water though. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Having taken up fly-fishing some 18 months ago, I would recommend the following cheap starter kit:

Shakespeare Odyssey 9 ft 6/7 weight rod

Okuma Airframe fly-reel to match ( http://compare.ebay.co.uk/like/37058234444...es&var=sbar )

7wt weight forward floating line WF7F ( http://www.flylineshop.com/barrio-fly-lines.html )

(As a beginner, you need a good fly-line above all else, a cheap reel is fine, so is a good cheap rod. But a good line is essential when learning to cast)

A selection of flies ( http://www.troutflies.co.uk/section.php/10...ulk-trout-flies call them and tell them you need a starter selection for fishing small still-waters)

Some tapered leaders, around 9-12 ft

Tippet material ( http://www.anglerschoice.co.uk/product/gra...on_tippet_50m_/ )

Landing net

Google some local trout waters ( http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Trout-fis...lient=firefox-a )

Well worth getting a professional casting lesson (ask at tackle-shop, trout- water)

But these videos explain it well

(Practice on grass, then watch the videos again and spot what you are doing wrong, then go again!)

Wait until the frozen lakes thaw :)

After a while, you will need to buy some decent rods in various weights, reels and lines to match (including intermediate and fast sink lines, lots of other bits and pieces, and start tying your own flies when the lakes are frozen)

The lakes in Devon were fine and a lot of fly anglers were out this weekend, is Parkwood frozen?

Dunno, I might give them a call on Friday.

Everything thawing fast, and balmy weather forcast for this week so hopefully by the weekend all the ice will be gone (for now).
