The one thing for sure Steve is that on these "artificial" pressured waters you definitely need to ring the changes when your not allowed to use the natural food item. Lets remember live not dead fish are a Zed's (or pike for that matter) natural food and as such cant "blow"! Everything else can. Just as we must not confuse what happens at the likes of OBH and Claydon we must also be careful not to confuse what happens on "natural" waters with them!

My brother Andrew has never caught a Zander and so before I finally have to give it up we are going to make an effort this year to do a bit more than I have been doing lately. Now I dont have my trout water access I do have a lot more time in the winter but health wise I think I'm going to be doing a lot of it Summer (a new one for me) and Autumn.Got several venues both new and old (to me) in mind and have no objections at all to sorting it so we can go "mob handed" so if Dales,Hawk,Anderoo,John, Headless or who ever want to tag along let me know.I mainly fish at night and doss around during the day, dont do the sleep while pred fishing thing. As my brother struggles to get time off it will be mainly a weekend/long weekend thing.I'm quite happy to get their a day early though to sort out the baits. So if anyone's up for it (venues from the Midlands to the Fens) let me know and soon as its warmed up and the early tench/breaming done I will sort.

Well budgie that sounds fantastic.

I know I get a bit excitable on forum discussions sometimes but there are just a few here that keep me posting.

Nothing would please me more than getting the little crowd you have mentioned together for a weekend.

Dave myself and Rob had quite a lot to do with helping Ken and Jock run the original pike trials there mate.As such we had a pretty much free run of the place in its hey day.Not the water it was I'm afraid,They actually do a season ticket there now and dont open it up to non ticket holders any more. If you want a day out there though I can sort one.I dont bother myself as its a shadow of what it was and far better venues to fish these days.

Still waiting for the invite you gave me down the rother but i know you have been very ill to say the least so get better mate as i need you to get a few pike under my belt before i show myself up infront of the lads on here. Blimey!! if you can get a day on bough beach what a result but you really need a fish finder surely although i expect you know where they are or you know a resevoir is no good finding them without one

As soon as you get going mate i can sort that website of yours. The way things are mounting on facebook we could have a direct link to your website. There are many worldwide contacts coming on that facebook . I know you have been round the globe a bit but you might get some sort of intro to some foreign work. On my facebook falconers i have the Prince of bahrain and have been invited to the big royal selling and displays so you will be surprised what facebook can kick up mate you really will.

Anyone not on our Facebook get on there i have managed to get 80 new fisherman from all over the world to join this week . i think we are on 250 already. We will be on thousands and thousands by Xmas if i get my arse into gear.

All the websites I have seen about Zander and all the good information provided here confirm that salt water fish will not catch Zander. It might seem obvious to experienced Zander Anglers but why are salt water fish no good as bait? Do they smell wrong, lack of freshness as new killed fresh water fish get plenty of recommendations. Do they taste salty or unatural or look wrong? I think I might be missing something so obvious :D

Very interesting thread this, I'd be interested in this trip too so count me in if it gets off the ground.

It's a good question and I don't know if we'll ever know the answer. I'm sure it's not the 'taste' of them, as the zander won't even pick them up in the first place, so it must be the 'scent' that puts them off inititally. I think they just don't recognise it as food (or at least, as their food).

It might just be down to exposure to sea baits, or lack of it. Most zander live in fairly sparesly populated waterways and aren't fished for much, and caught even less, so most zander will probably never see a sea bait. Whereas places like Bury Hill are heavily fished and have a lot more sea fish going in to them, plus of course it's an enclosed water. So perhaps the zander develop a taste for sea baits over time.

On some waters, sea baits are next to useless for pike too - so it might be for the same reason. Left to their own devices, pike (and zander) would almost never eat anything other than live coarse fish. But pike do seem to take to sea deads as an alternative food source a lot more readily than zander (OBH and similar excepted).

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music
