What Have You Got?

Nugg:

The heron is a solitary feeder, the father in-law has a dummy heron stood by the side of his pool, keep it clean and move its site from time to time and you won't get too much trouble from them, as they think they've been beaten to the spot.

Doesn't work, they ignore it if it doesn't chase them off. :(

In Germany they used decoys to attract them back into areas of the Rhine they no longer inhabited. :(

Trying to keep heron off koi, orfe, Green Tench, Golden Rudd and Goldfish. Net worked but was an eyesore. German Shepherd works but wants reward. Decoy has never worked in it's life. Best method so far is having two lines at different heights strung around perimeter of pond. Have not seen a single heron land for the last couple of month's. They still fly over but carry on flying.

The pleco is a warm water fish but some types can live at room temp. On the other hand there is a species called the butterfly pleco which can live in cold water (but they are not suitable for pond). The only downfall of the plec is that they are expensive! Especially the butterfly pleco which is hard to come by. £5.99 for a fish of 1 inch!

My pool has never been stocked ??? fish caught and recorded to date Crucians, Carp "Common and Wild with the odd Mirror" and Perch. I have been tempted to stock a few more species but decided to leave nature do the work.

Carp to 6lb Crucians to 1lb and perch to 4lb.

The only work carried out each year is some branch cutting a a good weed drag at least 4 times over the summer months.

Not fished last year left it alone.

No Peter it's not in my back garden, it takes me about 30 min drive out of Stockport.

The owner is a farmer friend of mine I just keep the place shipshape. The good thing is only me fishes the place well I do take a mate to help the drag the weedrake through.

If it was in my back garden the wife could get at me and we wouldnot want that would we.

This is the pool another pool a few of us look after we just drop the farmer £50 a year each to help out with the upkeep fencing etc.

thanks for the info about the plecs, I didn't realise that there were cold water varieties,

The tank is better shaded now than in its previous position, unfortunatly I have little say in where it goes as the wife is entirely the domain of her in doors.

I'll have to have a search for the butterfly variety.
