I put some Klinik on it. The fish seemed livel enough in itself, but I'll keep an eye on it.

I would guess at Ulcer disease . . is it just a carp pond ?? do you have any other fish . . it you have cormorants or fancy gold fish they will most likely show the same, mouth and fin rot can also be caused in or around an infection like this.

If it is expensive see a qualified vet who will administer an injection, if they are cheap and other stock is at risk . . knock it on the head or at a risk try detol or tcpip mildy diluted and applied to a clean wound.

after cleaning the wound though try not to suck you fingers

 

is there enough air going in the pond ? maybe a water check (but normally it doesn't link to abnormal properties or readings) have you added any dodgey fish recently maybe from a garden centre ??
