went to an aquarists show in london donkeys years ago the planted tanks were stunning ,missing though were fish and the necessary filtration the latter 2 just cant coexist with the former.

modern fake plants are a happy medium and some very good ones are available

coldwater fish get lots of problems indoors the water gets too warm in a central heated house ,these and coldwater marine thrive with a cooler in the water supply ,begged a cooler from my local and with a good service and clean it performed very well :)

Sorry chesters, but the Dutch system is heavily planted, filtered, and has a small number of fish. The secret is in the substrate. I am going back nearly 20 years, but (iirc) you have to have a neutral loam under the gravel into which the plants are planted (like, what's the alternative? ). Filtration is done by either an internal filter in a hidden corner of the tank, or by an external filter. Undergravel filters will not work because it would drag the loam through and into the water. Fish (if any) are kept to a shoal of small but colourful fish, and their main purpose is to provide fertilizer for the plants.

The tank I had used to provide all the plants I needed for the other ones. The vallis in particular was very invasive and needed cropping regularly, mostly to other tanks but sometimes I would take a few bag-fulls to my local shop in exchange for a fish or two or something.

Take care

Chesters - Would agree that real plants and real fish can be a problem. I tried to setup a tank with real plants but most of them ended up getting uprooted or broken up and clogging the filter.

If I had to try again it would be with fake plants and an internal filter(found the external was a pain to clean, noisy and also I became paranoid re. the flood which would happen if a hose came loose)

Take your point re. the cooler, good idea.

Hi Butiaboy, some of the stock at pets at home can be a bit iffy, having said that i have bought stock from there that has been fine.Even buying from a tropical fish shop does not guarantee good stock. In both cases, even if the fish look ok,how does one tell how long they have had those fish for!,certainly guppies are pretty short lived, hence the need to reproduce so fast.As i said earlier i have some pakistani loaches (grow to about 3")which are a little barbel like in appearance(sort of anyway),and have had those for nearly four years.

Plenty of corys I hope!

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
