I have a fish tank

I would assume the plec and the gourami were original inhabitants and they just got used to the water deteriorating. Newcomers however would react adversely to the water chemistry and quickly succumb. Even in a freshwater aquarium, regular water changes are a must.

Elton ..

Depending on the species, some Plecs can grow very big ! A friend of mine has had one for over 5 years, and it is nearly 2ft 6in long. It seems that once they get to a certain size they are almost indistructable !!!!!

Needless to say, it is in a very large 8ft tank on its own.

Great fish, and a marvelous conversation starter !!

p.s. Watch out for the dorsal fin spines (rays). Some of them can be nasty !!

an oscar with MORE attitude ,they can show annoyance like kids ,ignore them at your peril :D

watch the buggers as i said they do get bored ,just watch them look for the weak points on that lovely stainless mesh you carefully siliconed over the heaters or on the filter watch them watch you to see if your watching and watch them make SURE you are :D

Hiya,

I used to have a pair of tiger Oscars that hated heaters or anything else in *their* tank, heaters were smashed against the glass as was anything that was put in the tank.. I ended up having to make a filter at the side of the tank and put the heater in there.

Most of the other Oscars I've kept over the years have been better behaved than those two but as Chesters says .. ignore them at your peril :)

Elton re plecs.. I had one for 12 years that went from 2" to just under 2'.. he used to go nuts for a whole lettuce :)

Hiya alan,

Nope sadly not, the tank is set up as a tropical freshwater community for the time being. I have the cooling problem to solve first before I can go back to it. I've been told there is new coolers coming on the market that would be most suited to the job in hand and at a reasonable cost.. so if they are as good as they say, I'll go back to the cold water marine :)
