We still sell it and our wholesalers are still supplying it.

 

It is a very small pond and food changes into poo, which is transformed into nitrites and ammonia, which if all goes well transforms into nitrate which will cause a pea soup.

 

Planting oxygenating plants a good natural way as they absorb the nitrates and produce oxygen.

 

I have one small pond with no filter, just a pump and water cascade back into the pond, top it up with tap water with out any problems, but it does have lots of oxygenating plants into which I have to cut small clearings in July-Sept so as we can see the fish.

 

It is shielded by trees and bamboos which cut down the light and this helps a lot.

BTW Ziggy, I know I said in my first post that "some fishkeepers state that the green water is healthier for the fish than perfectly clear stuff", there can however be a potential problem later in the year if your pond remains green. In the autumn the algae will die off due to reduced sunlight and lower water temperatures, all that decaying matter could overwhelm your filters and cause polution problems.

 

Shouldn't be a problem though once the lilies have matured....

If your want barly straw, dont go and buy straw from the aquatic shop, go to a farmer and buy one off him for a fiver ist a dam sight cheeper and it last a million times longer.

A bale cost's around £2.50

A hand full in abit of netting cost around £2-3ish but you work it out.

We used to offer bales of straw for rabbits at £5, but people preferred it in plastic bags at £2.50.

Hi Ziggy,

Took this not very good quality pic today, the water is gin clear and 14" deep. No barley straw or filter, just plants and shading.

 

 

Today is the second time I have fed the two fish in the pool and they aint fussed as there is plenty of good natural food in the pool.

cool pic ken, despite the rain yesterday, the pond is still green, have only seen golden eric, but he seems happy enough, cant usually see black eric when the water IS clear.

Nononono, the summer rains will clear any dead algae, the autumn heatwave will bring it all back again

 

If this global warming keeps up, we'll be able to keep tropicals in our ponds soon

We cant use the Char they are using them all for bait, I read it on the flyfishing site!! Actually I think I'm off to wind them up look for a post on do Ferox make good Conger bait?!!
