Over and Under Rated Baits

Just curious as to what hook baits you think are 'over rated' and 'under rated'. Can be a variety of reasons, but would just like to see if there is a specific trend between us...

For me:

Over rated: Tiger Nuts - a lot of talk about them locally, but failing to produce results for me and friends!

Under rated: Halibut pellets - disregarded on one of my lakes, yet i'm catching consistently with them, keeping it quiet though ;)

I think it varies from water to water. I'd say bread is under rated. I'd say branded pellets are overrated as I find the cheap unbranded ones just as good.

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

Most commercial baits are way overated by their makers - but hey, anglers' gullibility keeps them in business, so what do I know?

Most underated? - easy - bread and all its derivitives. Flake, paste, bread punch, golden flake, crust etc. (How many of today's anglers even know what golden flake is ? ) Not forgetting the role of bread as groundbait, in the guise of crumb, mashed bread, liquidised bread etc etc

Edit - snap! dave dave, or nearly snap! - you can type faster than I can :)

If I had to fish any water in the world and catch a carp then Growlers would be my first choice! Pretty instant, takes a lot for them to blow (if ever), nuisance fish and crayfish proof. Self "baiting", easy to prepare. Last well once prepared. AND the carp love em!

I wont but could nearly say that Halibut Pellets are over rated as well! Just goes to show!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Mat,

Me neither (unless it has a more conventional name).

DE6,

"Hook bait" over here (notice my location) is bait that goes on the hook. Maybe sidehooked? to you. If I can't catch on corn in one of it's various forms they ain't biting.

Over rated. Boilies

I think some baits are underused rather than underrated, bread, cheesepaste, maize and tares all fall in this category imo, they all need some care and attention in use and preparation rather than being available straight out of the tin/packet: overrated (or maybe just overused), = boilies, pellets. ^_^

Edit: I could well be wrong but I think golden flake is flake with a little crust still attached.

DE6,

Just for fun I thought I might also add how the question would be interpreted in the US. OVER and UNDER is a very popular style of using two baits at the same time for carp. Maybe the word "wrap" would be meaningful in the UK. So, you question would be read: Over and under - rated baits. Which two baits complement each other when one is wrapped around the other? For example, some guys like to over/under cereal with protein baits. Some say Never do that.

The simplest rig would look like this. Mainline; hook; kernel of corn (underlay); oatmeal method about the size of a golf ball around the corn (overlay). The overlay melts and the underlay sits in the pile.
